The apparent loss spans the scope of decades of recordings, which may include material from Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elton John, Nirvana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers\" data-tag=\"tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers\">Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers<\/a>, R.E.M., Eminem, Nine Inch Nails, Janet Jackson, the Roots, Hole and many other artists\u2019 work.<\/p>\n<p>The fire was widely reported in 2008, but according to the <em>Times<\/em>, Universal Music Group (UMG) downplayed the amount of damage to the label\u2019s archive to the press, instead emphasizing its digitizing efforts and deflecting to the loss of video and television images as well as damage to the studio\u2019s King Kong tour attraction.<\/p>\n<p>Described as \u201cthe biggest disaster in the history of the music business,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> referenced a UMG internal document from 2009, which estimated 500,000 songs were lost to the fire. As the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 notes, the master tapes, which are the original audio tape recordings from recording sessions used to produce subsequent copies, are irreplaceable when it comes to capturing the sonic fidelity of the initial recording and serve as the basis for strong remastered reissues. Read the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/11\/magazine\/universal-fire-master-recordings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>New York Times Magazine<\/em> report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the findings published in the <em>Times<\/em>, UMG disputed the extent of the damage the fire caused to its archives, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/music\/news\/universal-music-disputes-severity-2008-vault-fire-new-york-times-1203239661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">telling <em>Variety<\/em><\/a> in a statement that the report contains \u201cnumerous inaccuracies, misleading statements, contradictions and fundamental misunderstandings of the scope of the incident and affected assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic preservation is of the highest priority for us and we are proud of our track record,\u201d UMG\u2019s statement via <em>Variety<\/em> reads in part. \u201cWhile there are constraints preventing us from publicly addressing some of the details of the fire that occurred at NBCUniversal Studios facility more than a decade ago, the incident \u2014 while deeply unfortunate \u2014 never affected the availability of the commercially released music nor impacted artists\u2019 compensation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several artists have responded to the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 story, including R.E.M. The band was \u201cnot aware until this morning,\u201d the rep said<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questlove also referenced the article in relation to group reissues he hoped to release. \u201cFor everyone asking why <em>Do You Want More<\/em> &amp; <em>Illadelph Halflife<\/em> won\u2019t get reissue treatment,\u201d Questlove wrote on Twitter, sharing a link to the report. \u201cI been dying to find all the old reels and mix the 8 or 9 songs that never made <em>DYWM<\/em>. My plan for both <em>DYWM<\/em> &amp; <em>IH<\/em> was to release all the songs and instrumental\/a cappella remixes on 45.
