The New Pornographers<\/a> have announced a new album, In the Morse Code of Brake Lights<\/em>, and shared its lead single \u201cFalling Down the Stairs of Your Smile.\u201d The album is available September 27th.<\/p>\n

Frontman and producer A.C. Newman said of the single in a statement , \u201cThere are so many songs like \u2018the something of love\u2019\u2014you know, there\u2019s \u2018The Book of Love,\u2019 \u2018The Freeway of Love\u2019\u2026Then I thought of \u2018falling down the stairs of your love,\u2019 and I thought, that kind of works. I think it has that element of how do you deal with the ideas of love and happiness in this world right now? When current events are stressful, that makes a stress on people\u2019s relationships, and you\u2019re trying to figure out how to be happy in this loving relationship in this world that seems ugly at every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newman also explained the origin of the album\u2019s title: \u201cI was about two-thirds of the way through the record when I began to notice that lyrically so much of it was pointing toward car songs. The opening track is \u2018You\u2019ll Need a Backseat Driver,\u2019 and that was a metaphor that seemed to be running through other songs, too. Next to the love song, I feel like the car song is one of the most iconic kinds of songs in pop music, from Chuck Berry to the present. There was so much of that throughout it that I started thinking: \u2018Oh, no, there\u2019s too many references to cars on this record!\u2019 And then I thought, \u2018No, that\u2019s good\u2014people might think it\u2019s a concept album.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The New Pornographers previously released Whiteout Conditions<\/em><\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n
