This September, Canadian indie<\/a> pop duo Tegan and Sara<\/a> are coming out (pun intended) with a double whammy (also intended) of material.<\/p>\n

The twin sister act is not just releasing their upcoming album, Hey I\u2019m Just Like You<\/em><\/a>; but they\u2019ll pair it with a new memoir, titled High School,<\/em><\/a> out September 24th. Tegan and Sara Quin\u2019s memoir traces the beginning stages of their illustrious music career: long before they released their 2004 breakout album, So Jealous<\/em>, got covered by the White Stripes, and made it to the Grammy Awards, they were just two kids kicking around in Calgary\u2019s garage band scene. A collection of songs they wrote during their teen years, the new LP serves as a soundtrack to their stories. The title track, Sara says, was the first song they ever wrote together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe original song, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m Just Like You,\u2019 was called \u2018Plunk,\u2019\u201d she recalls in Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s latest edition of \u201cThe First Time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe found a guitar in our basement, when we were 15 years old,\u201d adds Tegan. \u201c[We] both started sneaking it out and [wrote our own songs]. Sara would press play and record for me, I would do the same for her.<\/span> Sara\u2019s first song was called, \u2018Tegan Didn\u2019t Go to School Today.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Tegan\u2019s] first song was called \u201cCondamn<\/em>ation,\u201d says Sara with a laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Quin sisters recount many other firsts \u2014 from the time they met New Kids on the Block (\u201cI think we creeped them out\u201d) to the time they met Courtney Love (\u201cShe said, \u2018You have real balls to do this\u2019). Both openly gay and champions of the LGBTQ<\/a> community, Tegan and Sara also discuss their very first protest, which they attended with their mother in the Eighties.<\/span> \u201cIt was a Take Back the Night [march],\u201d says Tegan.<\/span> \u201cIt was about women coming together [against] sexual assault.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember mom telling a police officer to \u2018Fuck off\u2019 because they were laughing at us,\u201d adds Sara. \u201cThese guys came out of the bar and yelled, \u2018Your mom\u2019s a dyke!\u2019 We had no idea what that was, but we were like, \u2018Shut up!<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
