Kellyanne Conway<\/a> mocked Taylor Swift<\/a>\u2019s support for the Equality Act while singing \u201cYou Need to Calm Down\u201d<\/a> during an appearance on Fox News Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The jab was in response to Swift\u2019s acceptance speech<\/a> at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she criticized President Donald Trump<\/a> and his administration for not responding to an official White House petition she started to garner an answer about their opposition to the Equality Act. The Equality Act ensures certain protections for LGBTQ+ people, and while it passed the House over the summer, it faltered in the Senate and does not have the support of the White House.<\/p>\n

On Fox News, as Variety<\/em><\/a> points out, Conway said that she liked Swift\u2019s song \u201cYou Need to Calm Down\u201d and sang the line \u201cIf you say it on the street, that\u2019s a knockout\/If you put it in a tweet, that\u2019s a cop-out,\u201d before adding, \u201cI love that! I mean, that basically is Washington in a nutshell\u201d (it\u2019s unclear if the Trump administration official recognized the irony in her statement).<\/p>\n

Conway went on to bemoan \u201cHollywood and singers\u201d getting political, and suggested Swift\u2019s stance backfired, noting her support for the Democratic candidate<\/a> in the 2018 Tennessee Senate race didn\u2019t pan out. \u201cShe\u2019s also somebody who went up against President Trump head to head in the United States Senate race in Tennessee and lost handily,\u201d Conway said. \u201cMarsha Blackburn is our United States senator now.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while taking on Swift is one thing, Conway may have made a critical error in belittling the singer\u2019s devoted fan base as well. \u201cI would love to ask her audience if they even know what that is, [what] the Equality Act is and isn\u2019t,\u201d Conway said. \u201cShe\u2019s welcome to her opinion. I can tell you there\u2019s a lot of poison pills in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked what those poison pills were, Conway offered no specifics and turned the conversation to the economy.<\/p>\n

Along with Conway\u2019s appearance on Fox News, the White House did share a response to Swift\u2019s Equality Act petition \u2014 though as Pitchfork<\/a> points out, the statement was basically the same one they shared<\/a> in May: \u201cThe Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, the House-passed bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights,\u201d White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said<\/a>.<\/p>\n
