Both Clinton and bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bootsy-collins\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bootsy-collins\" data-tag=\"bootsy-collins\">Bootsy Collins<\/a> confirmed the news on social media, though a cause of death was not announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe lost the Master Mind behind the Graphic\u2019s [sic] &amp; Artwork of Funkadelic,\u201d Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bootsy_Collins\/status\/1166529317389635587\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cMr. Pedro Bell is an American artist and illustrator best known for his elaborate cover designs and other artwork for numerous Funkadelic and George Clinton solo albums. Thxs for yr service our brother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clinton wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/georgeclintonpfunk\/photos\/a.154760472610\/10156431094132611\/?type=3&amp;theater\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>, \u201cRIP to Funkadelic album cover illustrator Pedro Bell. Rest easy, Sir Lleb!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/georgeclinton.com\/family\/pedro-bell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bio on Clinton\u2019s website<\/a> details Bell\u2019s influences and describes how his unique visual style collided with Funkadelic\u2019s groundbreaking fusion of funk and psychedelic rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c[Bell] particularly liked the distinct and disturbing packaging of Frank Zappa albums,\u201d the bio reads. \u201cIt gave a special identity to the artist and to the fans who dug it. It plugged you into your own special shared universe. So he sent elaborately drawn letters to Funkadelic\u2019s label with other samples. George Clinton liked the streetwise mutant style and asked him to do the <em>Cosmic Slop<\/em> album cover in 1973. That was the moment Funkadelic became everything we think about them being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-877600 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/R-475153-1174977519.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bell became a fixture for the band, creating the album covers for 1974\u2019s <em>Standing on the Verge of Getting It On<\/em>, 1975\u2019s <em>Let\u2019s Take It to the Strange<\/em> and 1978\u2019s <em>One Nation Under a Groove<\/em>. Warner Brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/banned-in-the-u-s-a-20-wildest-censored-album-covers-154101\/funkadelic-the-electric-spanking-of-war-babies-1981-45371\/\">censored his original cover<\/a> for 1981\u2019s <em>The Electric Spanking of War Babies<\/em>, which included a naked women inside a phallic-shaped spaceship; the resulting image feared a green patch plastered with the message \u201cOH LOOK! The cover that \u2018THEY\u2019 were TOO SCARED to print!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the 1980s hiatus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/parliament-funkadelic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_parliament-funkadelic\" data-tag=\"parliament-funkadelic\">Parliament-Funkadelic<\/a>, Clinton recruited Bell to work on a wave of solo LPs, including 1982\u2019s <em>Computer Games<\/em>, 1983\u2019s <em>You Shouldn\u2019t-nuf Bit Fish<\/em>, 1985\u2019s <em>Some of My Best Jokes are Friends<\/em> and 1986\u2019s <em>Skeletons in the Closet<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat Pedro Bell had done was invert psychedelia through the ghetto,\u201d the Clinton website reads. \u201cLike an urban Hieronymus Bosch, he cross-sected the sublime and the hideous to jarring effect. Insect pimps, distorted minxes, alien gladiators, sexual perversions. It was a thrill, it was disturbing. Like a florid virus, his markered mutations spilled around the inside and outside covers in sordid details that had to be breaking at least seven state laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMore crucially, his stream-of-contagion text rewrote the whole game,\u201d the bio continues. \u201cHe single-handedly defined the P-Funk collective as sci-fi superheroes fighting the ills of the heart, society, and the cosmos. Funk wasn\u2019t just a music, it was a philosophy, a way of seeing and being, a way for the tired spirit to hold faith and dance yourself into another day. As much as Clinton\u2019s lyrics, Pedro Bell\u2019s crazoid words created the mythos of the band and bonded the audience together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a 2009 profile of Bell, <a href=\"https:\/\/arthurmag.com\/2009\/11\/15\/ailing-poverty-stricken-funkadelic-artist-pedro-bell-is-looking-to-sell-his-originals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Chicago Sun-Times<\/em><\/a> wrote that the artist was living in poverty and battling health issues.
