Fayhee and Tom Jones Jr., co-owner of Wilderness Sports, hosted a public meeting to form the early stages of the alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Craven attended the meeting and became actively involved in forming the nonprofit organization that would become Friends of Eagles Nest Wilderness, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/local-wilderness-nonprofit-celebrates-25-years-announces-name-change\/\">recently was renamed Eagle Summit Wilderness Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been very gratifying that the county has responded very positively to it,\u201d Craven said. \u201cI\u2019m very fortunate to work with such a great organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Craven served as president of the organization and chairman of the board for more than 20 years. Today, he remains an active board member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems an appropriate, if inadequate, measure of our deep appreciation to create an award given annually in his name to those, who, like him, demonstrate the highest principles of stewardship for public lands in general and wilderness in particular,\u201d Betz wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/cucr01-287x300.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-371347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/cucr01-287x300.jpg 287w, https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/cucr01-768x803.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/cucr01-980x1024.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\"><figcaption><strong>John Currie Craven, co-founder, former president and current board member of the Eagle Summit Wilderness Alliance.<\/strong><br \/><em>Courtesy photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe award is an honor I never could have imagined. \u2026 It gives you the warm fuzzy,\u201d Craven said. \u201cIt\u2019s also the fact that we\u2019re making a difference is why we\u2019re happy to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thinking back on the accomplishments he\u2019s most proud of, Craven talked about the inclusivity he has tried to instill in new wilderness proposals. Specifically, Craven talked about the land management proposals he worked on with former congressman and current Colorado Gov. Jared Polis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Craven talked about how the alliance worked to find a way to include different groups who wanted to use public lands in an appropriate manner. For example, designating some areas for motorized use and others for mountain biking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acceptance that we\u2019ve gained as a legitimate spokesman for wilderness values has been very rewarding,\u201d Craven said.<\/p>\n<p>Craven expressed disappointment with current politics surrounding public land because he wants Coloradans to continue to enjoy and recreate in public areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can find a common denominator that would appeal to the public land and the enjoyment of public land, and recognition that this is a very unique resource, then maybe there\u2019s hope for us as long as we can comply with (regulations),\u201d Craven said. \u201cThen, hopefully we can leave this world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The award itself is a stained glass piece made by local artist Gail Shears.
