Thom Yorke<\/a> made a rare late-night appearance Tuesday as a guest on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/a><\/em>, where the Radiohead<\/a> singer touched on a variety of topics ranging from Brexit to his new album Anima<\/a><\/em> to the importance of dreams.<\/p>\n

Yorke \u2014 whose last U.S. late-night TV appearance came in 2011 when Radiohead guested on an hour-long episode of The Colbert Report<\/em><\/a> \u2014 briefly reminisced about that segment with Colbert, who at the time was in his Comedy Central persona. \u201cMy character did not know who you were,\u201d Colbert joked.<\/p>\n

In reality, Colbert is well aware of Yorke, as his sons are \u201cenormous\u201d fans of Radiohead. Colbert\u2019s sons penned a number of questions for their father to ask Yorke on The Late Show<\/em>, but the one that made the cut was an inquiry about Yorke\u2019s favorite R.E.M. song. \u201c\u2018So. Central Rain,’\u201d Yorke revealed.<\/p>\n

Colbert then discussed how Radiohead\u2019s music and Yorke\u2019s anxiety-ridden lyrics have been prescient of the times, almost anticipating our current political landscape. \u201cHow does it feel to be right?\u201d Colbert asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I wasn\u2019t thinking about the future; I guess I was looking at what was happening at the time, it just seemed to get more obvious,\u201d Yorke said. \u201cIt\u2019s more overt now, but it felt like everything I was talking about was there. When we wrote the album Hail to the Thief<\/em>, that seemed pretty bad, that period of time when Bush Jr. got in. And now we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yorke then broke down the nuances of Brexit to Colbert and the Late Show<\/em> audience, offering up a harsh critique of Prime Minister Boris Johnson that Yorke admitted would probably prevent him from achieving future knighthood. \u201cWe live in strange times,\u201d Yorke added. \u201cIt\u2019s not my fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer then talked about the meaning of the word \u201canima,\u201d the title of Yorke\u2019s latest solo album. As Yorke explained, the Jungian phrase has numerous meanings, like \u201clittle spirits,\u201d \u201cdream-like state\u201d and, in Italian, it serves as another word for \u201csoul.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation closed with Yorke detailing why dreaming is so important for humans. \u201cI\u2019ve been reading a book called Why We Sleep<\/em> and I find it fascinating that dreams are an important part about how we relate to other people, how we relate to society, how we process the things that happen to us. And if we don\u2019t dream, we don\u2019t connect to people correctly,\u201d Yorke said. \u201cDreams are important fundamentally to how we live as human beings. I don\u2019t know, I just got really in to it while I was making the record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yorke is currently on a North American tour<\/a> in support of Anima<\/em>.<\/p>\n
