21 Savage<\/a> \u2014 the rapper who endured his own immigration saga<\/a> earlier this year \u2014 was honored Thursday by the National Immigration<\/a> Law Center (NILC), where he stated that children who live illegally in America should automatically become citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a child, you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on,\u201d 21 Savage told the Associated Press<\/em><\/a>. \u201cNow, you grow up and got to figure it out. Can\u2019t get a job. Can\u2019t get a license. I\u2019m one of the lucky ones who became successful. It\u2019s a lot of people who can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rapper born She\u2019yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph \u2014 who moved to America from the U.K. when he was seven years old<\/a> \u2014 added of immigrant children living in America: \u201cI feel like we should be exempt. I feel like we should automatically become citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

21 Savage spent 10 days<\/a> in an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center after he was arrested (and possibly \u201ctargeted<\/a>\u201c) as part of a sting operation in his now-native Atlanta; the rapper\u2019s visa \u2014 unknown to him \u2014 expired in 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you ain\u2019t got no choice, you should be exempt,\u201d 21 Savage told the AP<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I was 30, woke up and moved over here. I\u2019ve been here since I was like seven or eight, probably younger than that. I didn\u2019t know anything about visas and all that. I just knew we were moving to a new place.\u201d<\/p>\n

With his immigration status still in flux, 21 Savage \u2014 who was honored by the NILC for advocating immigrant justice \u2014 also bemoaned the increasingly difficult process of obtaining a visa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just lose hope,\u201d the rapper said of immigrants. \u201cI feel like kids who were brought here at young ages, they should automatically be like \u2018Yeah, you good to stay here, work and go to college.\u2019 It should be nipped in the bud before it gets to a point before you come of age\u2026 We got a fight that we need to continue in this country. It ain\u2019t over yet. \u201c<\/p>\n
