Will Oldham<\/a> loves to body surf; it reminds him of being immersed in music. \u201cI like the idea of being without any encumbrance or any equipment,\u201d he tells Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cTo be at the mercy of a natural force. \u2026 There\u2019s an element of it that\u2019s predictable and an element of it that\u2019s unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Oldham, the musical equivalent of body surfing is the Sacred Harp Singers<\/a>, an American tradition of choral music that originated in New England that brings together groups of people to sing four-part hymns and other traditional songs \u2014 no instruments allowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re completely enveloped by this mass of voice and intention coupled with the writers who are composers of the hymns and the songs, their intention,\u201d Oldham says. \u201cIt\u2019s erupting from inside of a group of people and becoming one thing. And you\u2019re inside of that. And it feels pretty wonderful because there\u2019s no escape. You\u2019re safe and releasing yourself to this natural force.\u201d<\/p>\n
