{"id":800641,"date":"2019-10-23T18:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T00:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/?p=373429"},"modified":"2019-10-23T18:00:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T00:00:33","slug":"breckenridge-council-approves-12-8-budget-increase-for-police-department-to-fund-raises-for-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/local-news\/breckenridge-council-approves-12-8-budget-increase-for-police-department-to-fund-raises-for-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"Breckenridge council approves 12.8% budget increase for police department to fund raises for officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/remembrance-SDN-091119-4-1024x819.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>BRECKENRIDGE \u2014 At Breckenridge Town Council\u2019s special work session Tuesday, the general fund budget was presented and included a proposed increase for the pay of police officers in Breckenridge.<\/p>\n<p>Breckenridge Police Department Chief Jim Baird told council members the department is struggling to retain officers.&nbsp;Baird said he has lost 10 officers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/local\/breckenridge-swearing-in-new-police-chief-on-april-23\/#targetText=Jim%20Baird%20(right)%20will%20be,chief%20on%20Monday%2C%20April%2023.\">since he became chief in April 2018<\/a>, with some going to other municipalities in the county. All positions in the Breckenridge police force fall within a $54,000 to $80,000 pay range.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The chief asked for a 12.8% increase in the police department\u2019s budget for 2020, which would move all police officers up from their current pay grades to the next pay grade. Council members agreed the budget increase was necessary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope it\u2019s enough,\u201d council member Erin Gigliello said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a place where I personally want to skimp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Town manager Rick Holman remarked that pay of police officers is a critical issue and that the police department is not something the town can do without.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get what you pay for,\u201d council member Jeffrey Bergeron said.<\/p>\n<p>Council members approved the budget increase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/breckenridge-council-approves-12-8-budget-increase-for-police-department-to-fund-raises-for-officers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Summit Daily<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRECKENRIDGE \u2014 At Breckenridge Town Council\u2019s special work session Tuesday, the general fund budget was presented and included a proposed increase for the pay of police officers in Breckenridge.
