Growing up in Littleton and attending school in the Vail
\nValley, John Spriggs has known about the area\u2019s fly-fishing waters for a long time.
\nAfter learning how to fly-fish in Vail at age 10, Spriggs spent time out on the
\nEagle and Colorado Rivers and Gore Creek.<\/p>\n

When a love for skiing brought Spriggs at the age of 22 up
\nto Montana to pursue that wintertime passion, his love for fly-fishing grew.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt fit my life really well,\u201d Spriggs said. \u201cJust living the
\nlifestyle: skiing in the winter, fly-fishing in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his ski passion, Spriggs lived out of his truck
\nfor three years, spending time pursuing those passions in British Columbia,
\nAlaska and Oregon. Ultimately, Spriggs returned to Colorado and began guiding
\nfor Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne in May. Since then, Spriggs has learned from
\nCuththroat guiding veterans like Summit County local Trent Jones, who has
\nexperience ski coaching and fly-fish guiding.<\/p>\n

Spriggs said he was hesitant for years to fly-fish guide
\nbecause he didn\u2019t want the work element of the job to soil his love for the
\nsport. But after a summer out on the water with Cutthroat, Spriggs said that
\nhasn\u2019t been the case at all, as last winter\u2019s huge snow season has made the
\nfishing good all summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to take people out who show interest in the
\nsport and want to have this be a hobby, something they really get into,\u201d
\nSpriggs said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re teaching people and you know they are going to go on
\nand fish for the rest of their life, it\u2019s just cool to see them at their
\nbeginnings getting into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As ski season approaches, what has Spriggs learned it takes
\nto make for a good fly-fishing guide here in Summit County?<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery client is different,\u201d Spriggs said. \u201cEvery client has
\na different expectation. And not putting so much pressure on catching fish.
\nIt\u2019s about showing clients and people who come out here that fly-fishing is
\nmore about having a good time and going out to cool destinations. It\u2019s about
\ngetting outside, being in the moment \u2014 the now, a mindful state. The fish are
\njust a plus, not putting too much pressure on that. Making sure clients are
\nhaving fun and just enjoying being out somewhere a lot of people don\u2019t get to
\nbe: on the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cutthroat Anglers is at 400 Blue River Parkway in
