{"id":800895,"date":"2019-10-31T15:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T21:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/?p=373744"},"modified":"2019-10-31T15:00:15","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T21:00:15","slug":"frisco-breckenridge-take-stand-on-puppy-mills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/local-news\/frisco-breckenridge-take-stand-on-puppy-mills\/","title":{"rendered":"Frisco, Breckenridge take stand on \u201cpuppy mills\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/CommunityWebCard-SDN-1024x638.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>FRISCO \u2014 Towns in Summit County are beginning to push forward with an effort to try to combat unethical pet breeding in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Frisco Town Council passed a new ordinance at its regular meeting last week prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats produced in inhumane breeding facilities, otherwise known as \u201cpuppy mills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really proud to live in a state where people value the<br \/>\nhumane treatment of animals,\u201d said Joyce Cohen, a Breckenridge resident leading<br \/>\nthe charge to outlaw puppy mill sales in the area. \u201cThe conditions in these<br \/>\nfacilities is horrifying, and the puppies they produce are often not well and<br \/>\nsold to unsuspecting people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cohen just recently began her efforts, following a similar push by her brother who\u2019s helped to get more than 50 towns in New Jersey to outlaw pet sales from inhumane breeding facilities. With Frisco passing its new ordinance on first reading, the town is joining Berthoud and Breckenridge as areas that have banned the practice.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Humane Society, there are 2 million dogs sold each year from about 10,000 active puppy mills in the United States. The organization notes that some dogs spend their entire lives in cramped cages without exercise or proper veterinary care. Dogs bred in puppy mills are also often sold sick and not socialized.<\/p>\n<p>While the issue isn\u2019t really a problem in Summit County, Cohen<br \/>\nsaid she\u2019s hoping to bring governments around the state into the cause, noting<br \/>\nongoing efforts in Dillon, Silverthorne and Eagle County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would encourage others to get involved, too,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cThere\u2019s so many good resources out there with the Human Society and Harley\u2019s Dream to help people get educated about this issue.
