{"id":802815,"date":"2020-01-07T10:02:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T17:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=934440"},"modified":"2020-01-07T10:02:15","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T17:02:15","slug":"beyond-the-bonnaroo-headliners-the-five-most-surprising-additions-to-the-lineup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/beyond-the-bonnaroo-headliners-the-five-most-surprising-additions-to-the-lineup\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond the Bonnaroo Headliners: The Five Most Surprising Additions to the Lineup"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/nelly-jerry-harrison-bonnaroo-surprises.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reading a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bonnaroo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bonnaroo\" data-tag=\"bonnaroo\">Bonnaroo<\/a> lineup is like slowly strolling through and<em> all the way down<\/em> the looking glass \u2014 the familiar big-name headliners<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>giving way to a mix of special performances and a broad array of up-and-comers from across the globe and musical spectrum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lizzo-tame-impala-lana-del-rey-bonnaroo-2020-lineup-934296\/\">2020 lineup<\/a> is no different: Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tool, Miley Cyrus, Bassnectar, Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, DaBaby and Young Thug are among the artists who got top billing this year, while the biggest \u201csurprise\u201d headliner award may go to Oysterhead, the jam supergroup of Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland, who just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/oysterhead-reunion-anastasio-claypool-copeland-concerts-899883\/\">announced their first shows<\/a> together in 14 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Within the small font thicket, though, there are plenty of tantalizing performances, such as British singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/yola-artist-you-need-to-know-780854\/\">Yola<\/a>, Turkish psych-rockers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=InymYroypxg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Alt\u0131n G\u00fcn<\/a>, Latinx bedroom pop savant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/cuco-new-album-tour-chiquito-723364\/\">Cuco<\/a>, Georgia outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cC1B8_IDjW4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Hero the Band<\/a>, Tuareg shredder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GZvPoE0EH1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Mdou Moctar<\/a> and Korean-American house maven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xoxCItHxLiM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Yaeji<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But wait, as the saying goes, there\u2019s more: For those making their annual pilgrimage to the farm in Manchester, Tennessee, here are five left-field and unexpected performances to check out at Bonnaroo 2020.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Turkauz With Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew, playing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/talking-heads\/\" id=\"auto-tag_talking-heads\" data-tag=\"talking-heads\">Talking Heads<\/a>\u2019 <i>Remain in Light<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, the Brooklyn-based nine-piece funk outfit Turkauz <a href=\"https:\/\/liveforlivemusic.com\/news\/turkuaz-expands-remain-in-light-jerry-harrison-adrian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">announced a handful<\/a> of festival sets with Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads and the group\u2019s former collaborator\/King Crimson guitarist, Adrian Belew, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Heads\u2019 1980 classic, <i>Remain in Light<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Along with performances at FloydFest and Electric Forest, the group has now added Bonnaroo to its itinerary. Harrison and Turkauz have collaborated in the past, with the latter producing the group\u2019s 2017 track, \u201cOn the Run.\u201d And when the first <i>Remain in Light <\/i>shows were detailed, <a href=\"https:\/\/jambands.com\/news\/2019\/12\/03\/talking-heads-jerry-harrison-adrian-belew-to-tour-40-years-of-remain-in-light-with-turkuaz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Harrison credited Turkauz<\/a> with inspiring him to get back on the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cTurkuaz is one of few artists that really understand this music,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce Adrian signed on it was clear we could recreate the excitement and joy that was achieved in Talking Heads iconic 1980 Rome concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nelly\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nelly\" data-tag=\"nelly\">Nelly<\/a> Performing <i>Country Grammar<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nelly is set to take the stage at Bonnaroo and perform his smash debut album, <i>Country Grammar<\/i>, 20 years after its release \u2014 almost to the day (the album arrived June 27th, 2000; Nelly performs at Bonnaroo June 13th).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although, at first glance, this booking seems to come out of nowhere, <i>Country Grammar<\/i> is undeniably worth celebrating: The album helped put St. Louis hip-hop on the map, reaching Number One on the <i>Billboard<\/i> albums chart, earning Diamond certification from the RIAA (more than 10 million copies sold) and spawning several indelible party rap hits, including \u201cCountry Grammar (Hot Shit),\u201d \u201cE.I.\u201d and \u201cRide Wit Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Superjam: Sylvan Esso Presents \u201cWith\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Electronic duo Sylvan Esso will helm this year\u2019s annual Bonnaroo Superjam, which always offers up an eclectic set of collaborations. For the 2020 installment, Sylvan Esso will recreate their recent string of \u201cWith\u201d shows, which found them expanding from a duo to a 10-piece band and completely reimagining their songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While an exact lineup for Bonnaroo has yet to be announced, the \u201cWith\u201d shows last fall featured Sylvan Esso <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynvegan.com\/sylvan-esso-10-piece-band-tour-begins-next-week-enter-to-win-nyc-tix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">performing alongside<\/a> artists like Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Matt McCaughan of Bon Iver, Dev Gupta of Mr. Twin Sister, and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Molly Sarl\u00e9, who perform in Mountain Man alongside Sylvan Esso\u2019s Amelia Heath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Bill Frisell\u2019s Harmony Featuring Petra Haden, Hank Roberts and Luke Bergman<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jazz made a small but noteworthy showing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/rage-against-the-machine-travis-scott-frank-ocean-coachella-2020-headliners-lineup-933201\/\">2020 Coachella lineup<\/a>, and that trend continues at Bonnaroo. Guitarist Bill Frisell\u2019s Harmony project is a gentle, luminous roots-jazz quartet featuring vocalist Petra Haden, vocalist and cellist Hank Roberts and vocalist, guitarist and bassist Luke Bergman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The group released their self-titled debut album last year, and they\u2019ll set the stage for a sublimely laid-back Sunday that will also feature Tame Impala, Lana Del Rey and Vampire Weekend. That same day, jazz fans will also be able to check out Makaya McCraven groovy, immersive beatscapes, which should serve as the perfect kick-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Resistance Revival Chorus<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Resistance Revival Chorus was borne out of the 2017\u2019s Women\u2019s March on Washington, and fuses music and activism with the aim of inspiring change on a grand political scale \u2014 while also advocating for women in the music industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The group now boasts more than 60 members, and over the past few years they\u2019ve collaborated with artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/jim-james-over-over-fallon-732819\/\">My Morning Jacket\u2019s Jim James<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/watch-keshas-emotional-star-studded-delivery-of-praying-of-grammys-2018-206142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kesha<\/a>.
