James Taylor<\/a> will take on the Great American Songbook on the singer\u2019s upcoming album American Standard<\/em>, due out February 28th. The LP is Taylor\u2019s first since 2015\u2019s Before This World<\/em> and 19th overall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had songs I grew up with that I remember really well, that were part of the family record collection \u2014 and I had a sense of how to approach, so it was a natural to put American Standard<\/em> together,\u201d Taylor said in a statement. \u201cI know most of these songs from the original cast recordings of the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, including My Fair Lady<\/em>, Oklahoma<\/em>, Carousel<\/em>, Showboat<\/em> and others.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Taylor also unveiled the first single from American Standard<\/em>, a take on the Gene De Paul-Sammy Chan jazz classic \u201cTeach Me Tonight,\u201d previously popularized by Dinah Washington and Frank Sinatra.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taylor added, \u201cIn terms of how they were performed and recorded before, we paid attention to the chords and melody, but we were interested in doing something new, and in bringing something new to it, we\u2019ve reinterpreted the songs, that\u2019s what makes it worth doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The album also features Taylor\u2019s version of standards like \u201cMy Blue Heaven,\u201d \u201cMoon River\u201d and \u201cPennies From Heaven,\u201d as well as a trio of tracks penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein.<\/span><\/p>\n
