The interview, conducted in in Peart\u2019s Los Angeles office (which doubled as a garage for his formidable vintage car collection) includes Peart\u2019s thoughts on the history of prog-rock, his explanation for why drumming is \u201cthe hardest job\u201d in a rock band, and his constant efforts at improving his playing, despite his status as one of the most-admired drummers in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking about a Buddy Rich quote,\u201d Peart says. \u201cHe was asked, \u2018What do you think about being the greatest drummer in the world? He said, \u2018Ya know what, dummy\u2019 \u2014 the way Buddy would say it \u2014 \u2018you don\u2019t achieve greatness. If you work hard at it, you achieve a certain amount of goodness and then you just try to preserve that.\u2019 And he said, \u2018I\u2019ve never been happy with anything I\u2019ve done but I keep trying.\u2019 Bingo. You know?\u201d<\/p>\n
