will release his first album of new material in more than 15 years this March with Solo<\/em>, featuring a collection of music the Canadian singer-songwriter recorded in the studio accompanied only by his guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lightfoot heralded the upcoming March 20th release of Solo<\/em> with the album\u2019s opening track and first single \u201cOh So Sweet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The legendary songwriter, who last released Harmony<\/em> in 2004, found Solo<\/em>\u2019s material tucked away in his office in his Toronto home; the two discs of material were recorded in late 2001 and early 2002, just before Lightfoot suffered a near-fatal abdominal aortic aneurysm. <\/span>After rediscovering the songs, Lightfoot entered Hamilton, Ontario\u2019s Grant Avenue Studio to rerecord the tracks with only his guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thought my fans would be interested in hearing what songs sound like when first written,\u201d Lightfoot said of solo in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following Lightfoot\u2019s 80th birthday in 2019, Rolling Stone<\/em> visited<\/a> the singer backstage prior to a performance at New York\u2019s Town Hall, where Lightfoot reminisced about his career and legacy. \u201cWe\u2019ve got songs that register well with the crowd, like \u2018Read My Mind\u2019 and \u2018Beautiful\u2019 and \u2018Don Quixote.\u2019 They\u2019re all tunes that just move along and have a forward momentum, which is what I look for in my writing,\u201d Lightfoot said. \u201cForward momentum.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
