The rapper was shot and killed in March 2019 at the age of 33.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meek Mill opened the tribute by rapping directly to Nipsey, accompanied only by piano. He was quickly joined by Roddy Ricch, currently the bestselling artist in the country, for a performance of \u201cLetter to Nipsey,\u201d before the appearance of DJ Khaled and John Legend for a rendition of \u201cHigher,\u201d a song from Khaled\u2019s latest album, which featured Hussle and Legend. The performance also included Kirk Franklin and a full choir.<strong><span class=\"s1\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The closing verse of the tribute was delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/yg\/\" id=\"auto-tag_yg\" data-tag=\"yg\">YG<\/a>, a Los Angeles contemporary and close friend to Nipsey Hussle. YG\u2019s participation in the tribute was thrown into doubt Friday after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/yg-arrest-robbery-grammy-awards-942630\/\">arrested<\/a> on robbery charges just two days before the Grammy ceremony.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hussle is up for three posthumous awards: Best Rap\/Sung Performance for DJ Khaled\u2019s \u201cHigher,\u201d which also features Legend, plus Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/nipsey-hussle-songs-you-need-to-know-816299\/\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cRacks in the Middle,\u201d<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy; the latter track was one of the last songs Hussle released prior to his death, with the single arriving the day after the 2019 Grammys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a statement, the Grammys\u2019 executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, said of the Hussle tribute: \u201cAn activist, entrepreneur, and rapper, Nipsey Hussle had a lasting impact on not just his community, but also the culture at large. There is no denying the influence he had, and his legacy will be felt for generations to come. We are honored to bring together this amazing group of artists to celebrate Nipsey\u2019s life and pay tribute to his many contributions to music. It\u2019s sure to be a memorable performance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hussle\u2019s manager <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9bd95dc3c4bdfd79802495bc16c0cd49?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=APEntertainment&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Steve \u201cSteve-O\u201d Carless said<\/a> of the posthumous success of \u201cRacks in the Middle\u201d: \u201cI was really shocked by that one because we had no idea that song would get recognized. [Nipsey] was so adamant about putting that song out right after the Grammys last year. The label was concerned that we didn\u2019t have enough time and runway to set it up. [Nipsey] was adamant about bypassing all the traditional [methods], upload protocols with the streaming partners, and [was] all about calling everyone directly because he felt like that record was a moment for his career \u2026 and now it\u2019s nominated for two awards at the Grammys.
