{"id":803555,"date":"2020-01-28T11:09:30","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T18:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=944459"},"modified":"2020-01-28T11:09:30","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T18:09:30","slug":"reed-mullin-corrosion-of-conformity-drummer-dead-at-53","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/reed-mullin-corrosion-of-conformity-drummer-dead-at-53\/","title":{"rendered":"Reed Mullin, Corrosion of Conformity Drummer, Dead at 53"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/reed-mullin-obit.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reed Mullin \u2014 drummer and co-founder of the long-running, highly influential North Carolina metal band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/corrosion-of-conformity\/\" id=\"auto-tag_corrosion-of-conformity\" data-tag=\"corrosion-of-conformity\">Corrosion of Conformity<\/a> \u2014 has died at age 53.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His band <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coccabal\/status\/1221995132704231425?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">confirmed the news<\/a> on social media Tuesday, writing: \u201cIt\u2019s with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a friend, a brother and pioneer. Reed you are loved and always will be.\u201d No cause or date of death was given. A representative for Corrosion of Conformity did not immediately respond to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mullin co-founded COC in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1982 with guitarist Woody Weatherman, bassist Mike Dean and vocalist Benji Shelton, who left the band the next year. New vocalist Eric Eycke appeared on their 1984 debut LP, <em>Eye for an Eye,<\/em> but for 1985\u2019s <em>Animosity,<\/em> they slimmed down to a trio. With its combination of ferocious uptempo hardcore and bluesy, Black Sabbath\u2013influenced hard rock, the album was an early milestone in the punk-metal hybrid style known as crossover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-albums-of-all-time-156826\/the-zombies-odessey-and-oracle-172848\/\"><i>Odessey and Oracle<\/i><\/a> of fucking crossover hardcore metal albums,\u201d Dave Grohl, a long-time friend of Mullin\u2019s who played in the drummer\u2019s all-star side project Teenage Time Killers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/dave-grohl-reed-mullin-explain-punk-supergroup-teenage-time-killers-47808\/\">previously told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> of <i>Animosity.<\/i> \u201cI\u2019ve stolen so many of his fucking riffs from that record over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">COC\u2019s sound evolved radically during the next decade, moving from the harsh, technical epics of 1991\u2019s <em>Blind<\/em> to the soulful, Southern-rock-influenced grooves of 1994\u2019s <em>Deliverance,<\/em> the band\u2019s major-label debut and the album where guitarist Pepper Keenan \u2014 who had joined in 1989 \u2014 stepped up as full-time frontman. Later on, the band toured with Metallica and earned a Grammy nomination for a track off 1995\u2019s <em>Wiseblood.<\/em> Throughout COC\u2019s various eras, Mullin\u2019s muscular yet distinctly funky style remained a defining feature.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jaB_mqtb_tU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mullin left the band in 2001 due to a back injury. But, in 2010, following a full-band hiatus, the <em>Animosity<\/em> trio lineup reunited and began playing shows, eventually releasing an excellent self-titled LP in 2012. \u201cAll three of the demonstrative themes of COC are on there,\u201d Mullin <a href=\"http:\/\/theindiespiritualist.com\/2012\/01\/20\/mullin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told the Indie Spiritualist<\/a> of the album at the time. \u201cThe Hardcore\/Punk from the Eighties, the late Eighties\/early Nineties mathy metal and finally the more Pepper, swampy\/doomy stuff. We love all three so that\u2019s what came out on the album and I think it came out magically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keenan, who had been working with New Orleans metal supergroup Down, rejoined in 2014, and in 2018, COC\u2019s quartet incarnation put out what would be its final album, 2018\u2019s fiery <em>No Cross, No Crown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mullin had battled health issues in recent years, suffering an alcohol-related seizure in 2016 and sitting out certain tours.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TusKotRru_c?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B73NmJzH0IJ\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Instagram post<\/a>, Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe \u2014 who had toured alongside Corrosion of Conformity and joined various other punk and metal heavyweights in Teenage Time Killers \u2014 credited Mullin as a formative influence, saying his modeled his own style on the drummer\u2019s vocals on COC\u2019s classic 1985 LP <em>Animosity. <\/em>\u201cIf you listen to the way I scream at times, and you listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0rsS4yI3ds0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u2018Hungry Child,\u2019<\/a> you\u2019ll hear Reed in my delivery,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Metallica\u2019s Lars Ulrich, another former tourmate of Mullin\u2019s, expressed gratitude to his late friend on Instagram. \u201cThank you for the crazy good times we had together. Thank you for always having the biggest smile on your face. And thank you for the fuckin grooves and that pocket that was all your own\u2026making Corrosion Of Conformity swing like nothing else!\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B73T_RTH7Yc\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-3.108\"><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Charlie Benante of Anthrax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B72WfwlgrnD\/?igshid=1p9gwrytd1ngg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">shared a vintage flyer for a show featuring his band and COC<\/a>, and wrote of Mullin, \u201cI always loved his style of drumming,\u201d recommending the <em>Animosity<\/em> track \u201cLoss for Words\u201d as a prime example of his greatness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mullin\u2019s many admirers and collaborators also included Grohl, who called Mullin \u201cmy drumming hero when I was 15 or 16 years old\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/dave-grohl-reed-mullin-explain-punk-supergroup-teenage-time-killers-47808\/\">2015 <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> interview<\/a> about Teenage Time Killers. That group\u2019s lone album was recorded at Grohl\u2019s 606 Studios with the Foo Fighters leader guesting on bass.<\/p>\n<p>A tribute from guitar luminary Matt Sweeney summed up Mullin\u2019s impact and legacy. \u201cReed Mullin was the charismatic architect of music that made hardcore massive and dangerous and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/heavy-metal\/\" id=\"auto-tag_heavy-metal\" data-tag=\"heavy-metal\">heavy metal<\/a> urgent and smart,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theheavyjamz\/status\/1222195360048844801?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cReed was the driving force of an underground scene that empowered countless lives.
