He was in command of the Seventh Cavalry with Custer and is a veteran of many campaigns.<\/strong><br \/><em>Archive image<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>This week in history as reported by the Summit County Journal the week of January 31, 1920.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>DISEASE CONTRACTED AT THE DENVER STOCK<br \/>\nSHOW KILLS ONE; 53 FLU VICTIMS, 4 PNEUMONIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breckenridge<br \/>\nis suffering from an epidemic of Spanish influenza and other points report a number<br \/>\nof patients from the disease contracted in Denver during the stock show week.<br \/>\nOne death has resulted from the disease or following complications, four cases<br \/>\nof pneumonia are officially on record and 40 cases of influenza have been<br \/>\nreported to the city and county health physicians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BACK BROKEN AT KOKOMO BY FALLING STONE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter Welch, a<br \/>\nminer in the Gold King mine at Kokomo, was probably fatally injured yesterday<br \/>\n(Wednesday afternoon when he was struck upon the back by a large rock which<br \/>\nfell upon him from the roof of the stope in which he was working.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTACT WITH 13,000-V WIRE SNAPS OFF<br \/>\nLIFE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>J.L. Kirby, an<br \/>\nemployee of the Tonopah Placers company was killed probably instantly at the<br \/>\nNo. 1 dredge of that company last Thursday, when he came in contact with a<br \/>\n13,000-volt current of electricity while trying to repair a transformer near<br \/>\nthe boat. <\/p>\n<p><strong>EMERGENCY NURSE HERE SOON \u2013 12,000 FLU<br \/>\nVICTIMS IN DENVER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Leadville<br \/>\ncommunity Red Cross nurse will arrive in Breckenridge on Sunday morning to care<br \/>\nfor the sick in local homes, working with the physicians of the town. This<br \/>\nannouncement follows a meeting last night of the executive members and the<br \/>\nboard of directors of the Summit county Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WELLINGTON LOADS 50 TONS OF CONCENTRATES<br \/>\nDAILY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Wellington<br \/>\nMines company is taking full advantage of present good price gold for spelter<br \/>\nand is loading fifty tons of high grade concentrates per day.
