Titled <em>Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston<\/em>, the record drops on May 1st via Ernest Jenning Record Co.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBloody Rainbow\u201d kicks off the LP, with frontman Doug Martsch delivering serene vocals over acoustic guitar. \u201cSwirling hypnotic\/Disrupts the girl,\u201d he sings, \u201cAnd the skull-headed spider\/The milk was low cal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston <\/em>features Martsch, bassist Jason Albertini and drummer Steve Gere. The songs derive from the band\u2019s rehearsals during Johnston\u2019s final tour in 2017 when they served as the late songwriter\u2019s backing band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty special for us,\u201d Martsch tells <em>Rolling Stone.<\/em> \u201cBasically we wanted to get good documentation of what our rehearsals were like. It was a lot heavier than what I thought it would be.\u201d The album was in the final stages of production in September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/daniel-johnston-dead-883161\/\">when the cult artist died<\/a> from natural causes at the age of 58.<\/p>\n<p><em>Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston <\/em>will be pressed on yellow vinyl, accompanied by a 32-page songbook. The record arrives months after Wilco\u2019s release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/daniel-johnston-jeff-tweedy-live-album-937832\/\"><em>Chicago 2017<\/em><\/a>, a vinyl-only album consisting of songs Tweedy (Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer, Darin Gray, James Elkington and Liam Kazar) cut while serving as Johnston\u2019s backing band in Chicago in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston <\/em>Tracklist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.
