{"id":803848,"date":"2020-02-05T11:04:33","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T18:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=948172"},"modified":"2020-02-05T11:04:33","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T18:04:33","slug":"that-time-randy-newman-wrote-the-theme-for-a-musical-cop-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/that-time-randy-newman-wrote-the-theme-for-a-musical-cop-show\/","title":{"rendered":"That Time Randy Newman Wrote the Theme for a Musical Cop Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/randy-newman-cop-rock.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/randy-newman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_randy-newman\" data-tag=\"randy-newman\">Randy Newman<\/a> scored his most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-features\/oscars-2020-predictions-peter-travers-946870\/\">Oscar nods<\/a> (for <em>Toy Story 4<\/em> and <em>Marriage Story<\/em>), he won an Emmy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emmys.com\/shows\/cop-rock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Outstanding Achievement in Music and Lyrics<\/a> for the theme song to the short-lived Nineties series <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cop-rock\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cop-rock\" data-tag=\"cop-rock\">Cop Rock<\/a><\/em>. The title? \u201cUnder the Gun,\u201d of course.<\/p>\n<p>The song features some truly Eighties-era production, as Newman, perched behind his keyboard, sings, \u201cDays of sunshine, tears of rain\/Precious memories of days gone by\/Eyes of darkness, feel the pain\/\u2026Did what had to be done\/living under the gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Cop Rock<\/em> was a 1990 TV show on ABC that merged a gritty crime drama with a musical \u2014 yup, citizens and law enforcement burst into song, seemingly for no reason. Unsurprisingly, it was canceled after 11 episodes. \u201cWhen I was making <em>Hill Street Blues<\/em>, a Broadway producer talked to me about the possibility of doing <em>Hill Street<\/em> as a Broadway musical,\u201d producer Steven Bochco told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/14\/arts\/television\/how-cop-rock-called-the-tune-that-some-shows-still-dance-to.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>. \u201cFor all sorts of practical reasons, that wasn\u2019t possible, but the idea of a musical cop show stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bochco tracked Newman down via his agent, he recalls to the <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.avclub.com\/an-oral-history-of-cop-rock-tv-s-first-and-last-musica-1798248164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">AV Club<\/a>. \u201cI told him my concept, and he said, \u2018You\u2019re crazy. It\u2019ll never work.\u2019 I talked him into it anyway. It was amazing working with him, though, and we\u2019ve been friends ever since. You know, Randy\u2019s a genius. \u2026 He got the only positive recognition that&nbsp;<em>anybody<\/em>&nbsp;got for that show!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>Newman wrote five songs for the pilot: \u201cHe\u2019s Guilty,\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve Got the Power,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the One for Me,\u201d \u201cSince She Chose Me\u201d and \u201cSandman.\u201d Oddly enough, \u201cShe Chose Me,\u201d a stunner of a romantic track, appears on his 2017 standout album <em>Dark Matter<\/em>. \u201c[In the show this] supposedly ugly guy [has] an absolutely beautiful wife, and he was wondering how he could be so blessed to have this wonderful person loving him. And that\u2019s not a bad idea. It\u2019s kind of a big idea. It\u2019s certainly worth a song or two,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/song-by-song\/randy-newman-explains-every-song-on-his-new-album-dark-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">he told Pitchfork<\/a>. \u201cSandman\u2019s Coming\u201d appears on 1995 musical <em>Randy Newman\u2019s Faust <\/em>with a brushed-up title.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ulg1HiMiuuQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is far from the first time a song Newman wrote for TV ended up on an album. \u201cIt\u2019s a Jungle Out There\u201d served as the theme song for early 2000s show <em>Monk<\/em> and won an Emmy in 2004. That song also appears on <em>Dark Matter<\/em>. Despite being used to denote the fears of the titular reclusive cop for the show, the new version of \u201cIt\u2019s a Jungle Out There\u201d treads more into the realm of police brutality than comedy: \u201cIt\u2019s a jungle out there\/Even the cops are scared today\/So if you see a uniform\/Do exactly what they say\/Or make a run for it\/I\u2019m only kidding with ya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The double duty this song serves pretty much encapsulates Newman as a songwriter. The same man who wrote the tender \u201cDon\u2019t Throw Yourself Away\u201d for <em>Toy Story 4<\/em> (nominated for Best Original Song this year), can also pen a scorching condemnation of racism like 1974\u2019s \u201cRednecks,\u201d in which he embodies the titular character to an uncomfortable degree.<\/p>\n<p>Newman faces off against his cousin, Thomas Newman, in the Best Original Score category at this year\u2019s Academy Awards: Randy for <em>Marriage Story<\/em>, Thomas for <em>1917<\/em>. Randy will also perform his <em>Toy Story<\/em> song at the ceremony Sunday.
