Spike Jonze<\/a><\/span>\u2019s lengthy collaboration and friendship with the Beastie Boys<\/span><\/a> is the focus of an upcoming photo book<\/a>, and ahead of the March 17th release of the director\u2019s Beastie Boys<\/i>, Jonze previews his first-ever photo book with a dozen photographs of the iconic trio.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this exclusive gallery of handpicked selections from Jonze\u2019s book, the filmmaker\/photographer\u2019s camera captures the Beasties on the first day he met the trio, as well as in the studio recording Ill Communication<\/em>, onstage at Lollapalooza \u201994 and wig-shopping in Los Angeles ahead of the \u201cSabotage\u201d video shoot. Each photograph is captioned with Jonze\u2019s own words and recollections about the Beastie Boys.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surviving members Ad-Rock and Mike D both contribute new text to Beastie Boys<\/em>, while Jonze pens the photo book\u2019s afterword.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis book shows the greatest act of the hip-hop generation in their truest colors as only a close friend could see them,\u201d publisher Rizzoli previously said of the photo book. \u201cFrom going on stage at Lollapalooza to writing together at Mike D\u2019s apartment; getting into character for a video to dressing up as old men to hit the basketball court; recording an album in the studio in Los Angeles to goofing around the streets of New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the photo book, a Jonze-helmed Beastie Boys Story<\/em> \u201clive documentary\u201d<\/a> will stream on Apple+ on April 24th.<\/span><\/p>\n
