The first line of Jehnny Beth<\/a>\u2019s new song \u201cFlower\u201d finds her whispering, \u201cThe flower field with murder,\u201d and after that you can\u2019t help but be curious about where this is all going. As the former frontwoman for Savages, Beth has always been prone to big, showy drama and, if \u201cFlower\u201d is any indication, her upcoming solo LP, To Love Is to Live<\/em>, will be a dusky, expressionistic affair \u2014 the kind, like with \u201cFlower,\u201d that begs you to keep listening. And if it\u2019s like \u201cFlower,\u201d it\u2019ll be worth it.<\/p>\n

The song is supposedly about a stripper who dances at the L.A. \u201cbikini bar\u201d called Jumbo\u2019s Clown Room, not that that has anything to do with a flower field of murder. It begins with a dub explosion before settling into an easy groove, with light trap-beat accents \u2014 you\u2019d think it was strip-club music if it weren\u2019t for a gently strummed guitar and Beth singing, \u201cShe\u2019s not easy to love.\u201d The thing that pushes it over the top, though, is the Big Chorus: \u201cShe loves me and I love her\/I\u2019m not sure how to please her\u2026I\u2019m not sure how to reach her, how to touch her.\u201d Beth has always been capable of affecting a Patti Smith\u2013like curl to her voice, and the way she does it on the chorus draws you before she starts whispering again, \u201cHow come we can\u2019t get closer?\u201d<\/p>\n

When the song ends, you still have questions. Will the woman Beth is singing about ever show her true self? Is getting closer the objective or is something bigger at play here? What\u2019s with the murder stuff? But given the subject matter, you\u2019re supposed to want to know more.<\/p>\n

Beth, who is bisexual, recently told The New York Times<\/a><\/em> that when she wrote \u201cFlower,\u201d it was simply to write a love song for a woman. \u201cTo me, women were in the distance, so it\u2019s been liberating to write about them,\u201d she said. She also told the paper that the way David Bowie made Blackstar <\/em>\u2014 knowing it would be his final statement as an artist before his death \u2014 influenced her to make a record that she felt matters. \u201cFlower\u201d fits the bill.<\/p>\n
