Eminem<\/a>\u2019s surprise performance of \u201cLose Yourself\u201d was one of the undeniable highlights of Sunday night\u2019s Oscars<\/a> \u2014 and the most puzzling. Why perform his Oscar-winning song 17 years after the fact? He won Best Original Song for the 8 Mile<\/em> cut in 2003 but did not attend the ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with Variety<\/em><\/a>, the rapper said that he was told that <\/span>the Oscars had planned a <\/span>tribute to past Best Original Song winners, with <\/span>8 Mile<\/em> as part of a montage introduced by Lin-Manuel Miranda. <\/span>The producers<\/span> reached out to Eminem to perform; the timing was good, given that Eminem has just released <\/span>his eleventh album, <\/span>Music to Be Murdered By<\/span><\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI kinda figured maybe since I didn\u2019t get a chance to do it [in 2003], maybe it would be cool,\u201d Eminem told Variety<\/em>. \u201cBack then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed \u2018Lose Yourself\u2019 on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn\u2019t think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn\u2019t really feel like a show like that would understand me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
