{"id":804047,"date":"2020-02-11T06:59:48","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T13:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=950513"},"modified":"2020-02-11T06:59:48","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T13:59:48","slug":"nicole-atkins-offers-safe-harbor-on-new-song-captain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/nicole-atkins-offers-safe-harbor-on-new-song-captain\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicole Atkins Offers Safe Harbor on New Song \u2018Captain\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/nicole-atkins-captain.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Singer-songwriter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicoleatkins.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nicole Atkins<\/a> unveiled a new love song, \u201cCaptain,\u201d from her upcoming album, <i>Italian Ice<\/i>, out April 17th via Single Lock Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The track is a rich, country-tinged ballad that boasts backing vocals from Spoon\u2019s Britt Daniel and finds Atkins offering a struggling partner a helping hand: \u201cAnd when you\u2019re found a wreck,\u201d she sings, \u201cI\u2019ll pull you on deck\/I can be your captain for once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCaptain\u201d also arrives with a video that finds Atkins delivering a delightfully hammy performance of the song as if she\u2019s starring in a gauzy and glitzy old school infomercial (complete with a hotline number you can call).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Italian Ice <\/i>marks Atkins\u2019 fifth full-length album and follows her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/how-nicole-atkins-quit-drinking-and-discovered-her-inner-soul-singer-116082\/\">2017 LP, <i>Goodnight Rhonda Lee<\/i><\/a>. She recorded the album with producer Ben Tanner at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with a band that featured David Hood and Spooner Oldham, who played in the Muscle Shoals session group known as the Swampers. Her backing band on the record also featured the Dap-Kings\u2019 Binky Griptite and Jim Sclavunos and Dave Sherman of Nick Cave\u2019s Bad Seeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMusically, it doesn\u2019t make any sense,\u201d Atkins said in a statement about the eclectic mix of musicians on <em>Italian Ice<\/em>. \u201cBut I\u2019m a superfan of all of them, and we ended up with the weirdest, craziest band ever. It just became this awesome misfit party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Along with the session players and Daniel, <i>Italian Ice <\/i>will feature contributions from Seth Avett, John Paul White and Erin Rae.
