The most endearing thing about Christine and the Queens<\/a>\u2019 new single, \u201cPeople, I\u2019ve Been Sad,\u201d is the fact that frontwoman Chris feels the need to tell<\/em> you that she\u2019s been sad. She\u2019s never really ever had to tell anyone she\u2019s been sad before; it\u2019s in the way she sings, the way her voice bends in the perfect pop song \u201cGirlfriend,\u201d<\/a> when she says, \u201cDon\u2019t feel like a girlfriend\/Damn, I\u2019d be your lover.\u201d Yet here she is with a new song, recently released<\/a> via Colors Studios<\/a>, telling everyone (tout le monde<\/em>) in English and her native French just how much her heart hurts.<\/p>\n

For as much as she spells it out, though, she also shows how deeply she feels her ennui. Even though the tune is still undeniably a Christine and the Queens song with its fuzzy New Wave synths and dance-y drums, there\u2019s a starkness here that hasn\u2019t been as pronounced in some of her previous songs. Chris has crossed an emotional threshold, singing, \u201cIt\u2019s true that, people, I\u2019ve been sad.\u201d But that\u2019s not enough. Because she\u2019s French, the sentiment has to be existential. \u201cI\u2019ve been gone,\u201d she sings, \u201cI\u2019ve been missing out\u2026Been missing out for too long, forsaking things for too long.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s never specific about what she\u2019s missed out on or just why she\u2019s so hurt, but just from the way she sings it, you can tell it has decimated her. In the middle of the song, she sings in French about how when she feels something, everything is much stronger, how loneliness has driven crazy.<\/p>\n

But then again, specificity about her depression wouldn\u2019t make the song any better. At one point she sings, \u201cIf you fall apart, then I\u2019m falling behind you\u201d; there\u2019s a codependence in the song. You\u2019re supposed to feel it along with her. When she sings, \u201cI\u2019ve been sad,\u201d the \u201cI\u201d could easily be whoever\u2019s listening to her words. You ask yourself, \u201cAm I sad, too?\u201d and more importantly, \u201cDo I need to give in and tell myself that I\u2019m sad?\u201d And then immediately put on \u201cGirlfriend\u201d again and get back into a more upbeat mindset.<\/p>\n
