Roger Waters<\/a> would like to see a new resistance movement sweep America.<\/p>\n

At a Q&A after a screening of his concert film, Us + Them<\/em>, in New York City on Tuesday night, the artist compared the way he saw younger people take to the themes of humanism in his concert abroad and stateside. When the moderator said, \u201cI was equally moved [in the film] just to see kids all over the world getting the message that they\u2019re not alone,\u201d Waters explained that he\u2019d like to see Americans more upset by the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunnily enough, they are [connecting to that message], but unfortunately not fucking here,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause if they were, you wouldn\u2019t have Donald Trump as a president, you wouldn\u2019t be having all this nonsense with the Democratic primaries, with them trying to destroy<\/em> the only candidate who can possibly win against Donald Trump, Sanders.\u201d Members of the audience, which was mostly media, cheered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re living here in a fool\u2019s hell,\u201d Waters said. \u201cThe United States of America is not a fool\u2019s paradise; it\u2019s a fool\u2019s hell. And watching [the film], it reminded me that the great battle is the battle between propaganda and love. And propaganda is winning. And sadly, the buttons of the propaganda machine are being pushed by people who are fucking sick. These sick, sociopathic fuckers, all of them, every single one of them. Believe it or not, Donald Trump is somewhere down here, floundering around in the muddy water at the bottom of the oligarchic pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this is a man who has failed at fucking everything in his life except<\/em> becoming the biggest \u2026 tyrant and mass murderer and mass destroyer of everything that any of us might love or cherish in the whole [world], only because he has the power,\u201d he continued. \u201cUnfortunately, he has his finger on the button on it, and he\u2019s right. In \u2018Pigs,\u2019 when we put up that he has a bigger button and it works, it does. And it\u2019s working all over the world, murdering brown people for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the moderator complimented Waters\u2019 passion and anger and said that the message was about love, the former Pink Floyd member joked, \u201cWait \u2019til you see the new show.\u201d Waters will be touring this summer on a trek dubbed \u201cThis Is Not a Drill,\u201d<\/a> for which he\u2019ll be performing in the round.<\/p>\n

At the press event, Waters also joked about how he\u2019d rather not sing one of his biggest hits again. But after rewatching the film, its lyrics rang true to him in a different way. \u201cI was sitting there thinking, \u2018Oh, Christ, if I ever have to sing \u201cWish You Were Here\u201d again, I\u2019m gonna shoot myself,\u201d he told the audience to laughs and \u201cawws.\u201d \u201cBut obviously, I will because actually I really like the song. \u2026 Yes, we did exchange a walk-on role in the war for a lead role in the cage. We all live in a fucking cage, and it is a walk-on role. And it won\u2019t become the opposite of that \u2013 which is to not remain enslaved \u2013 until we all, we the people, say, \u2018No, this is fucking bullshit.\u2019 \u2026 Obviously, somehow they\u2019ve managed to convince enough of us that this is a good idea that we\u2019re prepared to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waters will likely expand on these themes on his \u201cThis Is Not a Drill\u201d tour, and at his keynote talk at the South by Southwest conference in Austin this spring. Filmmaker and activist Michael Moore will be moderating that discussion.<\/p>\n
