{"id":804136,"date":"2020-02-13T08:38:28","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T15:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=952212"},"modified":"2020-02-13T08:38:28","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T15:38:28","slug":"watch-the-who-debut-new-songs-at-intimate-london-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/watch-the-who-debut-new-songs-at-intimate-london-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch the Who Debut New Songs at Intimate London Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/the-who-new-songs-daltrey-townsend.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-who\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-who\" data-tag=\"the-who\">The Who<\/a> kicked off their 2020 tour on Wednesday with a pair of intimate acoustic shows at the PRYZM nightclub in London, one of the tiniest venues they\u2019ve played in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Both gigs (which were just eight songs each) were heavy on hits like \u201cSubstitute,\u201d \u201cPinball Wizard,\u201d and \u201cWon\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u201d but they did bust out \u201cBreak the News\u201d and \u201cShe Rocked My World\u201d from their new LP, <em>Who,<\/em> for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3TKXKyd65HA?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Roger Daltrey was so unfamiliar with \u201cBreak the News\u201d (written by Pete Townshend\u2019s brother Simon) that he had to read the lyrics from a manuscript. \u201cI\u2019m in the first stages of the dreaded late-seventies,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the memory ain\u2019t what it was. I\u2019ve never sung this song before live. I might have to read it.\u2026 Simon is such a great songwriter. For years he\u2019s done his songs at my solo shows, but it\u2019s great to find a song that actually fits on a Who album. It fits really well. Let\u2019s try it.\u201d (The first attempt at the song totally falls apart, much to Townshend\u2019s dismay, but they get it the second time.)<\/p>\n<p>They play at the PRYZM again on Friday evening, which is the 50th anniversary of their landmark <em>Live at Leeds<\/em> show at Leeds University. They\u2019ll take a month off after that before hitting arenas all across England for electric shows featuring local orchestras. The tour comes to America in April and wraps up in May with a seven-night stand at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e-GKATyGvmE?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Who<\/em> is their first collection of new songs since 2006\u2019s <em>Endless Wire.<\/em> Many of the songs have yet to be played in a concert setting, although \u201cHero Ground Zero\u201d and \u201cBall and Chain\u201d were performed regularly throughout 2019. \u201cWe\u2019ll probably try to include a few new songs [this year] from the album, but maybe not,\u201d Townshend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/pete-townshend-interview-age-of-anxiety-book-who-plans-911479\/\">recently told <em>Rolling Stone.<\/em><\/a> \u201cI don\u2019t know. We don\u2019t have much time to build that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>Townshend also recently released <em>The Age of Anxiety,<\/em> his first novel. It\u2019s the story of an elderly art dealer accused of a horrible crime and a young rock star disillusioned by fame. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a desire to write fiction,\u201d Townshend told <em>Rolling Stone.<\/em> \u201cI wanted something that would allow me to go off in a number of different directions.
