{"id":804140,"date":"2020-02-13T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T17:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=947163"},"modified":"2020-02-13T10:00:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T17:00:15","slug":"grateful-dead-prep-june-1976-boxset-drop-live-friend-of-the-devil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/grateful-dead-prep-june-1976-boxset-drop-live-friend-of-the-devil\/","title":{"rendered":"Grateful Dead Prep \u2018June 1976\u2019 Boxset, Drop Live \u2018Friend of the Devil\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/grateful-dead-capitol-theater.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/grateful-dead\/\" id=\"auto-tag_grateful-dead\" data-tag=\"grateful-dead\">Grateful Dead<\/a> announced a massive boxset titled <em>June 1976 <\/em>Thursday.&nbsp;They\u2019ve also shared a nine-minute version of \u201cFriend of the Devil,\u201d recorded live at New York\u2019s Beacon Theater.<\/p>\n<p>Produced by Dead archivist David Lemieux, the 15-CD set contains complete performances from June 1976: Boston Music Hall (June 10th and 11th), the Beacon Theater (June 14th and 15th) and an evening at New Jersey\u2019s Capitol Theater (June 19th). Author Jesse Jarnow wrote the liner notes.<\/p>\n<p>June of 1976 marks a pivotal time in Dead history when the band returned to the road after a break in touring in 1974. They transitioned from arenas to theaters, recording crisp, intimate shows. \u201c<span lang=\"en-CA\">Gone was the massive financially draining and physically exhausting Wall Of Sound PA system,\u201d Lemieux tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201cthe stadiums and hockey arenas were replaced by beautiful, small theaters, Mickey Hart was back in the band after a five-year sabbatical, and the repertoire had changed quite a bit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several songs made their debut on the setlist, while some tracks were resurrected from the past: \u201cSt. Stephen\u201d and \u201cCosmic Charlie\u201d from 1969\u2019s <em>Aoxomoxoa&nbsp;<\/em>and \u201cFriend of the Devil\u201d from <em>American Beauty<\/em> \u2014 an album that turns 50 in November.
