Sam Smith<\/a> samples audio from the 2001 cult classic film Donnie Darko<\/em> in their latest single, \u201cTo Die For,\u201d released on Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cReleasing this song is going to be a wild one \u2014 I feel like it\u2019s from one of the deepest parts of me,\u201d Smith told Rolling Stone<\/em> ahead of the single\u2019s release. \u201cI wrote this with Jimmy Napes and Stargate in L.A. during a time of self-discovery and heartbreak. This is for all the lonely hearts out there on another Valentine\u2019s Day xx.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scene Smith samples is from one of Donnie Darko\u2019s therapy sessions in the film. Darko (portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal) is discussing his loneliness, and how he\u2019s never seen proof that he\u2019s not alone in the world; he calls the quest of searching for proof \u201cabsurd.\u201d \u201cThe search for God is absurd?\u201d his therapist asks him. \u201cIt is if everyone dies alone,\u201d he replies.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes that scare you?\u201d she asks. Darko responds, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the music video<\/a>, Smith is a lonely, disembodied mannequin head in a store window display, watching solemnly as happy couples walk past them day to day. They eventually escape their solitary existence, but probably not in the way that they had hoped or intended.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Die For\u201d follows a trio of single releases from Smith, including \u201cHow Do You Sleep,\u201d<\/a> the Normani collaboration \u201cDancing With a Stranger\u201d<\/a> and a cover of Donna Summer\u2019s electronic dance classic, \u201cI Feel Love.\u201d<\/a> They also covered Judy Garland\u2019s \u201cGet Happy\u201d<\/a> with Ren\u00e9e Zellweger for the biopic Judy<\/em>, for which Zellweger won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Their latest album, In the Lonely Hour<\/em>, was released in 2014.<\/p>\n
