What does James Bond<\/a> sound like in 2020? Judging by Billie Eilish<\/a>\u2019s new theme song for the 25th<\/sup> Bond film, \u201cNo Time to Die,\u201d he sounds pretty exhausted. And doesn\u2019t that make a strange kind of sense? How does a martini-swilling, womanizing International Man of Mystery come out unscathed by a world that has, essentially, outgrown him? He can\u2019t be a woman<\/a> \u2014 but he can channel his world-weariness through the world\u2019s most weary teen.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo Time to Die,\u201d which shares a title with the upcoming film, lacks the bombast and brass of previous Bond themes<\/a> \u2014 but it does capture something essential about the character: a roving secret agent who has no time for love, no time for ties and certainly no time to die. The track kicks off with sparse, ominous piano, swelling tensely until Eilish\u2019s singular voice comes in, \u201cI should have known\/I\u2019d leave alone\/Just goes to show\/that the blood you bleed is just the blood you own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is this a soundtrack for exploding cars and sharks with lasers on their heads? Hell no. It\u2019s a soundtrack befitting 2020 Bond, played by a worn-out Daniel Craig facing down his fifth and final outing as 007. Bond always gets the girl \u2014 but it never ends well. As such, Eilish\u2019s insouciance, her acceptance of a lonely life, is really kind of fitting.<\/p>\n

The characteristic Bond strings come in on the chorus, as Eilish sings, \u201cI\u2019ve fallen for a lie\/You were never on my side\/Fool me once\/Fool me twice\/Are you death or paradise?\/Now you\u2019ll never see me cry\/There\u2019s just no time to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s almost as if Eilish is writing the theme for a wholly revamped version of Bond for which co-writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge was just allowed to run wild with the script, replacing Craig with Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) from Killing Eve<\/em> (Waller-Bridge was the writer for Season One) and all the various Bond girls with Villanelle (Jodie Comer).<\/p>\n

Now that sounds like 2020 Bond.<\/p>\n
