Long before he was a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-band\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-band\" data-tag=\"the-band\">the Band<\/a>, writing modern-day standards like \u201cThe Weight\u201d and \u201cUp on Cripple Creek,\u201d he was writing songs, playing guitar, and touring with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in the late Fifties. The Hawks later became the Band, placing Robertson at the forefront of Bob Dylan\u2019s first electric tour, jamming at Big Pink, playing Woodstock, and the Martin Scorsese\u2013directed concert film <em>The Last Waltz<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Robertson\u2019s story with the Band is the subject of a new documentary, <em>Once Were Brothers<\/em>, which opens in New York and L.A. on February 21st. The film will also get a wide release on February 28th. In conjunction with the doc, Robertson also wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/robbie-robertson-brothers-video-947611\/\">song, \u201cOnce Were Brothers,\u201d<\/a> which appeared on his <em>Sinematic<\/em> solo album last year.<\/p>\n<p>Since he was in the spirit of looking back, <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>invited him to our office to reminisce for our \u201cFirst Time\u201d video series. In the clip, he recalls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-first-time\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-first-time\" data-tag=\"the-first-time\">the first time<\/a> he fell in love with guitar, playing live with Bob Dylan, seeing Big Pink, stepping onstage at Woodstock, realizing he had a hit record, meeting Martin Scorsese, and meeting Eric Clapton.<\/p>\n<p>The last story could also double as the \u201cfirst time he broke up one of his favorite bands.\u201d \u201cIt was after <em>Music From Big Pink <\/em>came out,\u201d Robertson says, referring to the Band\u2019s debut album. \u201cWe were introduced, and he said, \u2018You know, this record of yours, I\u2019ve been telling people all over about this record. I had one of the first acetates of it. And it affected me so strongly that I\u2019ve decided I\u2019m breaking up Cream. I\u2019m leaving Cream.\u2019 And I said, <em>\u2018Whoa, whoa<\/em>. I kind of like Cream.
