Archie Andrews has encountered musicians before in Riverdale<\/a> \u2014 including Kiss, the Ramones and Jenny Lewis<\/a> \u2014 but this time the teenager will encounter New Wave legends the B-52\u2019s.<\/p>\n

A one-shot issue titled Archie Meets the B-52s<\/a> #1<\/em><\/a>, the comic features Archie as an intern at WRIV, the local TV station. His supervisor, Kevin, tells him that he\u2019s working on a local variety show and that the B-52\u2019s will be the next musical guest.<\/p>\n

The New Wave band is in need of a local act to play with. Archie picks up the late Ricky Wilson\u2019s guitar and shreds to \u201cPrivate Idaho,\u201d<\/a> not realizing that the band was watching him. They enlist Archie and his band to perform with them \u2014 only he doesn\u2019t have one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess a lot of people have seen us as comic book characters because we have such a graphic image with giant hair-dos and powerful clothes,\u201d singer Kate Pierson<\/a> tells Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cWe have a good sense of humor. It lends naturally to a comic book portrayal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve always resonated with teenagers,\u201d Pierson continues. \u201cWe attract people who feel like they\u2019re outsiders. We\u2019re all about inclusion. It\u2019s OK to be different. It\u2019s cool<\/em> to be different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pierson grew up reading Archie Comics, even collecting juice glasses of the characters. She now binge-watches Riverdale<\/em>. Frontman Fred Schneider attempted to read them but wasn\u2019t allowed. \u201cMy father banned comics in our house,\u201d he says with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe iconography of Archie<\/em> is deep within our psyche,\u201d Pierson says. \u201cFrom children to teenagers to adults who watch Riverdale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cArchie<\/em> stays relevant and funny,\u201d Schneider adds.<\/p>\n

The 32-page comic book was written by Archie Comics co-president Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg, with art by Dan Parent, J. Bone, Glenn Whitmore, and Jack Morelli.<\/p>\n

The B-52\u2019s concluded their massive 40th anniversary tour<\/a> last year. They\u2019re currently working on a documentary and brainstorming ideas for a Broadway play.<\/p>\n
