Less than a year after Mark Lanegan<\/a> released his 2019 LP Something\u2019s Knocking<\/em>, the singer-songwriter returns with a new album he was inspired to record while writing his upcoming memoir.<\/span><\/p>\n

Straight Songs of Sorrow<\/em> arrives May 8th, just over a week after Lanegan\u2019s memoir Sing Backwards and Weep<\/em> hits shelves on April 28th. On Wednesday, Lanegan shared the companion album\u2019s first song \u201cSkeleton Key,\u201d a seven-minute track that recalls Lanegan\u2019s bluesy Nineties solo output.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWriting the book, I didn\u2019t get catharsis,\u201d Lanegan said of the memoir and new album in a statement. \u201cAll I got was a Pandora\u2019s box full of pain and misery. I went way in and remembered shit I\u2019d put away 20 years ago. But I started writing these songs the minute I was done, and I realized there was a depth of emotion because they were all linked to memories from this book. It was a relief to suddenly go back to music. Then I realized that was the gift of the book: these songs. I\u2019m really proud of this record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lanegan\u2019s collaborators on Straight Songs of Sorrow<\/em> include Gutter Twins bandmate Greg Dulli, Led Zeppelin\u2019s John Paul Jones, Lamb of God\u2019s Mark Morton, the Bad Seeds\u2019 Warren Ellis, Portishead\u2019s Adrian Utley, Ed Harcourt, Peter Hook\u2019s son Jack Bates and Lanegan\u2019s wife Shelley Brien, who co-wrote the album\u2019s \u201cBurying Ground\u201d and \u201cEden Lost And Found\u201d and sings duet alongside her husband on \u201cThis Game of Love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
