How to Get Away With Murder <\/em>actor Jack Falahee and DJ\/producer Elephante (a.k.a. Tim Wu) met years ago as high school classmates in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They\u2019ve since found success in their respective fields, and more recently they\u2019ve teamed up as Diplomacy, a duo whose new single, \u201cUndertow,\u201d is a brooding, triumphant track worth hearing. A mid-tempo rocker with a sparse beat that churns and grinds its way towards a chorus you can\u2019t help but feel, this song is like picnicking on Valentine\u2019s Day under dark gray skies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Falahee, who says his childhood soundtrack was equal parts Nirvana and Broadway musicals, sings in a tone that\u2019s at once raw and lived-in, like someone who\u2019s really been through some stuff:<\/p>\n

I know I\u2019m not the most eloquent<\/em>
Always hide behind a cigarette<\/em>
Fighting fires burning in my head<\/em><\/p>\n

While Diplomacy\u2019s previous single, \u201cSilver Lake Queen,\u201d was all jangly guitars and frenetic quips, \u201cUndertow\u201d soaks in slow-burning synths and an electro-pop undercurrent, inspired by Wu\u2019s dance music background (he\u2019s remixed tracks by everyone from Katy Perry to Lorde). If \u201cSilver Lake\u201d was a track celebrating the nerd who takes home the prom queen, \u201cUndertow\u201d is the cautionary tale you put on repeat to make sure you don\u2019t fuck everything up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe song is about the moment you realize you\u2019re falling for someone but you\u2019re still worried that past demons might inevitably destroy your chances together,\u201d Falahee says. \u201cIt\u2019s about a spring fling blossoming into a summer romance, while calling attention to themes of overcoming addiction, self sabotage, and insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea of embracing differences and uncertainties head-on is at the core of what drives Diplomacy, whose debut self-titled EP drops this week. \u201cI really like the idea\u2026 of negotiating or bringing together two sides,\u201d Wu says. \u201cWhether [joining] the acting world and the music world, or me being Asian and Jack being white, it\u2019s just all these different contrasts that have emerged through the work we are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
