The Doors<\/a>\u2019 Robby Krieger<\/a> will release his first solo album in 10 years this spring, The Ritual Begins at Sundown<\/em>. Ahead of the LP\u2019s arrival, the guitarist also shared the first single \u201cThe Drift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Krieger\u2019s first album since 2010\u2019s Singularity<\/em> was influenced by another classic rock icon, Frank Zappa<\/a>: The Ritual Begins at Sundown<\/em> was co-written and produced by Zappa collaborator Arthur Barrow, features Zappa alumni among Krieger\u2019s backing band and also boasts a cover of Zappa\u2019s \u201cChunga\u2019s Revenge\u201d on the tracklist.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was hanging out with my buddy Arthur Barrow and we had some songs we had been fooling around with then we got some other friends involved,\u201d Krieger said of the new album in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ritual Begins at Sundown<\/em> also leans heavily on Krieger\u2019s love of jazz music. \u201cWhen I wrote songs for the Doors, it was always the music first. I think you have to have some musical ability to really understand jazz,\u201d Krieger said in a statement.  <\/span>\u201cWhen I was young, I didn\u2019t really understand it. It took me a while. I was going to the clubs with John Densmore \u2014 before the Doors \u2014 to really get an appreciation of jazz. We used to go see Wes Montgomery, Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, stuff like that. At first, I didn\u2019t really get it, but after a while, it sank in and I always loved it after that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Krieger also explained how, after the Doors, he fell in with many of Zappa\u2019s collaborators in Los Angeles, including trumpeter Sal Marquez. \u201cAfter the Doors, I started becoming interested in jazz and started hanging out with a guy called Sal Marquez,\u201d the guitarist said. \u201cSo, we put this band together and that was the first Robby Krieger band and we played at the Whiskey A-Go-Go with Don Preston, Zappa\u2019s keyboard player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barrow, Krieger\u2019s long-time collaborator, then \u201cstarted hanging out with Don and with Zappa, Don was in my band so we decided to put Arthur in charge of the mixing at the Whiskey for our shows, that\u2019s when I first met him in the Seventies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ritual Begins at Sundown<\/em> arrives April 24th via Mascot Label Group\u2019s imprint the Players Club.<\/span><\/p>\n
