James Hetfield<\/a> staged his first live performance since his rehab stay on Thursday, delivering an acoustic rendition of Eddie Money<\/a>\u2019s \u201cBaby Hold On\u201d at a tribute to the late singer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Metallica singer wasn\u2019t among the announced guests at the Tribute to Money \u2014 led by Sammy Hagar, George Thorogood, Rick Springfield and more \u2014 at Beverly Hills, California\u2019s the Saban, but Hetfield used the opportunity to return to the stage for the first time since September 2019; soon after, Metallica canceled<\/a> a planned Australian tour as Hetfield reentered a rehabilitation facility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proceeds from the tribute gig benefitted the USC Eddie Money Cancer Research Fund.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Bay Area rock icons, Hetfield and Money were friends, with \u201cPapa Het\u201d paying tribute to Money on social media following Money\u2019s September 2019 death<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In January, Hetfield made his first public appearance<\/a> since <\/span>his rehab stay <\/span>at an opening ceremony for a Los Angeles automotive museum\u2019s exhibit of his classic cars. The singer also participated in a Q&A session at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the band\u2019s planned All Within My Hands benefit gig on March 28th \u2014 their first scheduled gig since Hetfield\u2019s latest battle with sobriety \u2014 was postponed until September 12th, 2020. \u201cWe may have been a little too ambitious with that date in terms of getting our shit together and giving you an experience that matches or surpasses the first event held in November of 2018,\u201d the band said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Hetfield back onstage, Metallica appears to have a clear pathway toward their busy summer; the band has booked five two-night festival appearances<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
