The Dream Syndicate<\/a> will release their third studio album in four years this spring with The Universe Inside<\/em>, the Paisley Underground pioneers\u2019 exploration of krautrock and electric jazz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahead of The Universe Inside<\/em>\u2019s April 10th arrival, the band shared first \u201csingle\u201d \u201cThe Regulator\u201d and its video, a 20-minute \u201cpsychedelic journey through New York City, equal parts panoramic, psychedelic, somnambulistic and political,\u201d the band said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with founding singer and guitarist Steve Wynn, the current Dream Syndicate lineup features founding drummer Dennis Duck, bassist Mark Walton, guitarist Jason Victor and keyboardist Chris Cacavas, plus guests like the Long Ryders\u2019 Stephen McCarthy, who contributes electric sitar on \u201cThe Regulator.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018\u201dThe Regulator\u2019 is a microcosm of the entire record \u2014 it was just a formless, trippy mass as we all started playing together,\u201d Wynn said of the song in a statement. <\/span>\u201cThere was an early Seventies drum machine \u2014 a Maestro Rhythm King, the same model used on \u2018There\u2019s a Riot Goin\u2019 On\u2019 \u2014 with Dennis locking in and setting the pace. Stephen grabbed an electric sitar because it was the first thing he saw. Jason and I were kicking pedals on like lab monkeys in a laboratory and Mark was a lightning rod, uniting all of those elements into one tough groove. I collected a list of random, unconnected lyric ideas that I kept on my phone. I tried them all out in random order in my home studio just to see how they would feel and that one-take test run is the vocal you hear! There\u2019s just so much lightning-in-a-jar, first take excitement on this record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Universe Inside<\/em> \u2014 the reunited Dream Syndicate\u2019s quick follow-up to 2017\u2019s How Did I Find Myself Here?<\/em> and 2019\u2019s These Times<\/em>, the band\u2019s first albums since 1988 \u2014 is available to preorder<\/a> now. The album was largely improvised and recorded during an 80-minute studio session. \u201cAll we added was air,\u201d Wynn said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In support of The Universe Inside<\/em>, the Dream Syndicate have booked showcases at the 2020 SXSW.<\/span><\/p>\n
