Rufus Wainwright<\/a> honors Joni Mitchell<\/a> in the new single \u201cDamsel in Distress.\u201d The singer-songwriter also announced a new album, Unfollow the Rules<\/em>, out April 24th via BMG.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamsel in Distress\u201d is accompanied by an animated clip that features a woman in bellbottoms sauntering through landscapes with the song\u2019s lyrics displayed in the clouds. \u201cYes, I remember smiles\/Yes, I remember wiles,\u201d he sings over reverb reminiscent of Radiohead\u2019s The Bends.<\/em> \u201cBehind the Square of Sloan\/Under the English moon within the Chelsea sky.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Wainwright, the track was written as an homage to Mitchell, particularly the structure. \u201cMy husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cI wasn\u2019t that familiar with Joni\u2019s music but J\u00f6rn [Weisbrodt] became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she\u2019s one of the greats. So it\u2019s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I\u2019m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Produced by Mitchell Froom, Unfollow the Rules<\/em> is Wainwright\u2019s ninth LP, and his first pop album since 2012\u2019s Out of the Game<\/em>. \u201cDamsel in Distress\u201d follows the lead single \u201cTrouble in Paradise.\u201d<\/a> The singer-songwriter took on an Anna Wintour-inspired drag persona for the video.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I would like this album to symbolize is a coming together of all the aspects of my life which have made me a seasoned artist,\u201d he said. \u201cMy aim is to emulate the greats of yore whose second acts produced their finest work \u2014 Leonard Cohen when he made The Future,<\/em> when Sinatra became Sinatra in his 40s, when Paul Simon put out Graceland.<\/em> Pop music isn\u2019t always about your waistline. Many songwriters improve with age. I\u2019m flying the flag for staying alive!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wainwright will release an Audible project<\/a> this year,= titled Trip Elegies: Montreal to New York. <\/i>He\u2019ll embark on a world tour in the spring, kicking off in North Charleston, South Carolina, on April 19th. He\u2019ll head to Europe until May 1st, where he\u2019ll perform at New York\u2019s City Winery for two nights. The trek will wrap up on November 6th in Paris.<\/p>\n
