{"id":804683,"date":"2020-02-27T12:47:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T19:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=959006"},"modified":"2020-02-27T12:47:21","modified_gmt":"2020-02-27T19:47:21","slug":"sxsw-notes-handful-of-cancellations-amid-coronavirus-scare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/sxsw-notes-handful-of-cancellations-amid-coronavirus-scare\/","title":{"rendered":"SXSW Notes \u2018Handful\u2019 of Cancellations Amid Coronavirus Scare"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CoronaVirus.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>While the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/coronavirus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_coronavirus\" data-tag=\"coronavirus\">coronavirus<\/a> pandemic has begun to rock the global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/live-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_live-music\" data-tag=\"live-music\">live music<\/a> scene, causing tour and festival postpones around the world, all is still steady \u2014 mostly \u2014 for South by Southwest, which will commence in Austin in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s not without a few minor hiccups; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sxsw\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sxsw\" data-tag=\"sxsw\">SXSW<\/a> has seen \u201ca handful\u201d of cancellations specifically because of the coronavirus, according to a statement from the media festival, though no more overall cancellations than usual. The spokesperson also said the festival is following Austin Public Health\u2019s recommendations to prevent spread of the disease, and the festival has added an information sheet on the coronavirus to its attendee safety resources page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The SXSW 2020 event is proceeding as planned,\u201d a SXSW spokesperson said in a statement. \u201c<\/span><span>Safety is a top priority for SXSW, and we work closely with local, state, and federal agencies year-round to plan for&nbsp;<\/span><span>a safe event.&nbsp;<\/span><span>Where travel has been impacted, especially in the case of China, we are seeing a handful of cancellations. However, we are on par with years past in regard to registrants who are unable to attend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p><span>Among those cancelations is China Gathering, a platform that\u2019s brought Chinese entrepreneurs and musicians to SXSW for the past three festivals. China Gathering is canceling its entire slate of events, including its trade summit and music showcase.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first few months of 2020 have been rough,\u201d Vivian Forrest, China Gathering\u2019s founder and CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinagathering.com\/2020\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in an open letter published on the China Gathering website<\/a>. \u201cI sincerely believe that staying together and staying strong, we can find a way to stop the disease. Fingers crossed for a brighter and healthier future, and we look forward to being even more involved in next year\u2019s SXSW. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The virus has most heavily impacted the live music scenes in Europe and Asia, with multiple musical acts postponing concerts over health concerns. A few U.S. live music events have been hit though. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/us-korean-music-festival-postponed-amid-coronavirus-958518\/\"> Korea Times Music Festival<\/a> in Los Angeles, one of the most prominent annual Korean music events in America, was indefinitely postponed earlier this week, and the Overpass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/music-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_music-festival\" data-tag=\"music-festival\">Music Festival<\/a> in Orange County was postponed before then.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/s0226-Covid-19-spread.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed Wednesday morning a Coronavirus infection in California<\/a> in which the patient had no travel history to another patient with the virus.
