{"id":804717,"date":"2020-02-28T09:07:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T16:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=959576"},"modified":"2020-02-28T09:07:57","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T16:07:57","slug":"lucinda-williams-unleashes-scorching-new-track-you-cant-rule-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/lucinda-williams-unleashes-scorching-new-track-you-cant-rule-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucinda Williams Unleashes Scorching New Track, \u2018You Can\u2019t Rule Me\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Lucinda_Williams_byDanny_Clinch_1_6942_flat-copy-scaled@.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>It turns out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lucinda-williams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lucinda-williams\" data-tag=\"lucinda-williams\">Lucinda Williams<\/a> was just getting started when the veteran singer-songwriter rolled out \u201cMan Without a Soul,\u201d the first missive from her upcoming album <em>Good Souls, Better Angels<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That roiling, simmering track, the first new song she\u2019d unveiled in four years, clearly took aim at the current White House occupant (\u201cwithout dignity and grace,\u201d among other failings), and with no apologies.<\/p>\n<p>Williams has now unleashed a second track from the album, and it\u2019s even more ornery than its predecessor. \u201cYou Can\u2019t Rule Me\u201d is a straight-up blues-bar stomp; Williams\u2019 voice has rarely sounded so beautifully ravaged, and her guitarist, Stuart Mathis, lets rip with a slide-guitar solos that match the spittle in her voice.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3dCgux3O1tM?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Keeping with its feisty arrangement, the song is a don\u2019t-tread-on-me declaration that\u2019s even more resolute than usual for Williams. \u201cMan, I\u2019ve got a right to talk about what I see\/Way too much is going wrong,\u201d she starts. Even without naming names or specific gripes, she never lets up: \u201cYou might slip me and might trip me, I\u2019m gonna tell you one last time\/You can\u2019t rule me.\u201d And just like the best bar-room jam, the song seems to end \u2014 and then keeps going before it crashes to an end.<\/p>\n<p>Both songs will be included on <em>Good Souls, Better Angels<\/em>, scheduled for April 24 release.
