He stands on a foggy beach, staring at the ocean. Originally released on Mercury Rev\u2019s 1999 LP <em>Deserter\u2019s Songs<\/em>, Berninger\u2019s take is much more somber and delicate. \u201cHoles, dug by little moles, angry jealous,\u201d he sings over acoustic guitar. \u201cSpies, got telephones for eyes, come to you as\/Friends, all those endless ends, that can\u2019t be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berninger performed the song on Wednesday evening at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/iggy-pop-betty-lavette-margo-price-tibet-house-2020-concert-lineup-921832\/\">2020 Tibet House benefit<\/a> at New York\u2019s Carnegie Hall. Produced by Booker T. Jones, the track features David Bowie\u2019s former bassist Gail Ann Dorsey, Matt Barrick and Walter Martin of the Walkmen and Willie Nelson\u2019s longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael.<\/p>\n<p>The single was unveiled in time for March 4th, when the Center for Reproductive Rights will present oral arguments to the Supreme Court in the case against Louisiana (<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.reproductiverights.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">June Medical Services v. Russo<\/a>). \u201cI found myself wasting a lot of time and energy worrying about all the threats to the world and to my kid\u2019s rights,\u201d Berninger tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cFinally, I just turned everything off and tried to chill. I started listening to a lot of old favorite records and re-reading books. All my energy and optimism came back and I started recording a lot. So many people I know are having this experience and doing their best work right now. Instead of watching everything being destroyed, why not have fun and create things that can fight back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The B-side features a spoken word piece by attorney Neil Katyal \u2014 President Obama\u2019s top Supreme Court Lawyer \u2014 titled \u201cA Reproductive Rights Call to Action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m contributing to this record because reproductive freedom is an essential right that affects all Americans, and we shouldn\u2019t just look to the courts to safeguard it,\u201d Katyal said in a statement. \u201cCongress can protect it by itself\u2014all it takes is a few more votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>7-inches for Planned Parenthood<\/em> was first released as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/foo-fighters-bon-iver-bjork-contribute-to-planned-parenthood-box-set-119817\/\">box set in 2017<\/a>, containing songs by Foo Fighters, Bj\u00f6rk, Bon Iver, St. Vincent, Sleater-Kinney, Mary J. Blige and others.
