Apple<\/a> is among a growing list of companies who are canceling their plans to participate at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas amid coronavirus<\/a> concerns, Variety <\/em><\/a>reports. The annual music, technology and entertainment festival\u2019s 2020 event runs from March 13th-22nd.<\/p>\n

Apple TV+ SXSW<\/a> events included the premieres of Spike Jonze\u2019s Beastie Boys Story<\/em>, an animated musical series called Central Park<\/em> and a docuseries entitled Home<\/em>. Apple had also planned to host a discussion of Little America<\/em> with docuseries creators Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon.<\/p>\n

The tech giant joins Facebook, Twitter and TikTok<\/a>, who have all pulled out of their scheduled SXSW events. Variety<\/em> also noted that Netflix<\/a> and Amazon Studios<\/a> have also recently nixed their SXSW plans. Netflix had five film screenings and a #BlackExcellence<\/em> series panel scheduled. Meanwhile, Amazon had two screenings with panels planned.<\/p>\n

SXSW organizers say the fest will go forward and on Wednesday, Austin public health officials backed the decision, saying that canceling the event would not make the city any safer.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, there is no evidence that closing South by Southwest or other activities is going to make this community safer. We are constantly monitoring that situation,\u201d Dr. Mark Escott, interim medical director and health authority for Austin Public Health said, via Austin American-Statesman<\/em><\/a>, adding they\u2019ve assembled a panel of health officials to evaluate the situation. \u201cAnd if there\u2019s any evidence that our community will be safer by closing down public events, we\u2019ll do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
