{"id":804907,"date":"2020-03-05T08:24:04","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T15:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=960896"},"modified":"2020-03-05T08:24:04","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T15:24:04","slug":"watch-pink-floyds-nick-mason-perform-set-the-controls-for-the-heart-of-the-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/watch-pink-floyds-nick-mason-perform-set-the-controls-for-the-heart-of-the-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Pink Floyd\u2019s Nick Mason Perform \u2018Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nick-mason-set-the-controls-for-the-heart-of-the-sun.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>About two years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pink-floyd\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pink-floyd\" data-tag=\"pink-floyd\">Pink Floyd<\/a> drummer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nick-mason\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nick-mason\" data-tag=\"nick-mason\">Nick Mason<\/a> decided it was time to emerge from semiretirement and hit the road for the first time since the band last toured in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>He recruited Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, longtime Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboardist Dom Beken with a very bold idea in mind: they\u2019d only perform songs written <em>before<\/em> Floyd broke through to mainstream success with <em>Dark Side of the Moon<\/em> in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I couldn\u2019t play \u2018Comfortably Numb\u2019 better than David or Roger, or indeed even the Australian Pink Floyd [tribute band],\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/pink-floyd-nick-mason-talks-saucerful-of-secrets-tour-763130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in 2018.<\/a> \u201cIt became a matter of finding something else that engaged us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They called the group Nick Mason\u2019s Saucerful of Secrets. They began performing at tiny clubs around London as a sort of test run, but quickly moved to large theaters across the globe where they played to euphoric audiences of Floyd fanatics. \u201cI felt 25 again,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/pink-floyd-nick-mason-interview-saucerful-of-secrets-tour-846765\/\">Mason told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cI could finally see the other musicians and we all made eye contact. I could see the back of the auditorium and everyone listening. Big stadiums are an extraordinary thing to do and it gives you the opportunity to do all the pyrotechnics and all the rest of it, but it\u2019s not as engaging as an audience that you can see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A professional camera crew was rolling when they played two shows at London\u2019s Roundhouse in May 2019 and it\u2019s coming out as live album and concert film on April 17th. Prior to that, it\u2019s playing theaters for a single night on March 10th. They have dates all across Europe before wrapping up July 2nd at the Palacio Municipal in Madrid, Spain. Along the way, they are even playing a couple of shows in Russia.
