{"id":804956,"date":"2020-03-06T08:29:20","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T15:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=963463"},"modified":"2020-03-06T08:29:20","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T15:29:20","slug":"watch-the-monkees-perform-last-train-to-clarksville-from-new-live-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/watch-the-monkees-perform-last-train-to-clarksville-from-new-live-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch the Monkees Perform \u2018Last Train to Clarksville\u2019 From New Live Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Monkees-live-album.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/monkees\/\" id=\"auto-tag_monkees\" data-tag=\"monkees\">Monkees<\/a> are launching their 2020 tour on April 3rd at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, the same day that their new live album <em>The Mike and Micky Show<\/em> is arriving in stores.<\/p>\n<p>The set was recorded on the duo\u2019s 2019 tour and features big hits like \u201cPleasant Valley Sunday\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m a Believer\u201d mixed in with fan favorites like \u201cYou Told Me,\u201d \u201cCircle Sky\u201d and \u201cAs We Go Along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The set was assembled by the Monkees\u2019 manager\/music historian Andrew Sandoval. \u201cI set upon hours and hours of listening and critiquing every performance we captured, making a spreadsheet, breaking down the best versions of each song \u2014 in some cases in the best verses, choruses, solos,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/andrew.sandoval.007\/posts\/10219046050529940?__tn__=K-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> he wrote in a Facebook post.<\/a> \u201cI then handed off my research to Christian Nesmith who worked tirelessly to create mixes of the best material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy instruction to him was maybe different than what most fans would imagine,\u201d he continued. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to just make a <em>Mike and Micky Show<\/em> keepsake. I wanted to make a live Monkees album that would stand out from the archival and bootleggy soundboard CDs that had come before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Monkees hit the road last year just weeks after the death of Peter Tork, who they honored every night of the tour. As the U.S. tour wound down, Michael Nesmith took to Facebook and expressed misgivings about future shows beyond a series of upcoming dates that were coming up in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI committed to an Australian tour but I am expecting that will be it for me,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michaelnesmith\/posts\/10157257391430116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">he wrote.<\/a> \u201cI start to feel curmudgeonly more and more and less and less suited for singing pop songs \u2014 clever and happy and fun to play as they are \u2014 but is a bit like singing \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 over and over. Combine that with the fact that Television Music was never my first pursuit. People who like my work have another clear window they can see through \u2014 if they choose. But \u2014 in any case \u2014 the shows wear me down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/michael-nesmith-interview-monkees-tour-peter-tork-917100\/\">spoke to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in December, however, he had a different attitude about the whole thing. \u201cI have tried to take the advice of people that care about me that said, \u2018Don\u2019t be such a crank\u2019 or \u2018Don\u2019t be such an asshole,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cMick and I are in fine fiddle and fine form and fine voice and everything.
