{"id":805098,"date":"2020-03-10T19:00:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-11T01:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=965424"},"modified":"2020-03-10T19:00:49","modified_gmt":"2020-03-11T01:00:49","slug":"lady-gaga-newly-discovered-insect-species-named-after-singer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/lady-gaga-newly-discovered-insect-species-named-after-singer\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady Gaga: Newly Discovered Insect Species Named After Singer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/shutterstock_editorial_10229760ap.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lady-gaga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lady-gaga\" data-tag=\"lady-gaga\">Lady Gaga<\/a>\u2019s flamboyant visual style has inspired the name of a newly discovered insect species. <i>Kaikaia gaga<\/i> is a new genus of the treehopper bugs first discovered almost 30 years ago near the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefader.com\/2020\/03\/10\/lady-gaga-insect-species-nicaragua-treehopper-kaikaia-gaga?utm_source=tftw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>the Fader<\/em><\/a> reports (via<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.illinois.edu\/view\/6367\/807084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Illinois News Bureau<\/a><\/em>).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brendan Morris, a PhD candidate in entomology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, borrowed roughly 1,000 treehoppers from Pittsburgh\u2019s Carnegie Museum of Natural History for research purposes \u2014 but after studying a female bug under a stereoscope, he discovered some unique features that distinguished her from the others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a report via the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapress.com\/j\/zt\/article\/view\/zootaxa.4729.2.9\/0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Zootaxa<\/em><\/a>, Morris and his co-author, Illinois Natural History Survey entomologist Christopher Dietrich, described the creature\u2019s \u201cadditional m-cu crossvein in the forewing, as well as a frontoclypeal shape and overall appearance similar to&nbsp;<i>Platycentrus&nbsp;<\/i>St\u00e5l,\u201d along with a \u201cnarrow, straight shape of the second valvulae.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf there is going to be a Lady Gaga bug, it\u2019s going to be a treehopper because they\u2019ve got these crazy horns,\u201d he told <em>Illinois News Bureau<\/em>. \u201cThey have this wacky fashion sense about them. They\u2019re unlike anything you\u2019ve ever seen before.\u201d One might even say they\u2019re <em>horned<\/em> this way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Morris wasn\u2019t able to extract DNA from the insect, but he plans to visit Nicaragua in hopes of finding other living <em>K. gaga<\/em> in the tropical forest where the original was collected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTreehoppers are wacky, and I think that makes them especially suited to be \u2018spokesbugs\u2019 for the wide range of habitats they use,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The human Gaga recently announced a six-date <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lady-gaga-chromatica-ball-tour-962547\/\">summer tour<\/a> that launches July 24th in Paris and includes U.S. dates in Boston, Chicago and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
