{"id":805224,"date":"2020-03-13T11:16:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T17:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=966881"},"modified":"2020-03-13T11:16:52","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T17:16:52","slug":"the-first-time-bob-geldof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/the-first-time-bob-geldof\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Time: Bob Geldof"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bob.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-boomtown-rats\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-boomtown-rats\" data-tag=\"the-boomtown-rats\">The Boomtown Rats<\/a> \u2014 best known in America for their 1979 hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8yteMugRAc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cI Don\u2019t Like Mondays\u201d<\/a> \u2014 are returning from a 36-year recording hiatus this month with the release of their new album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2wWTc0s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Citizens of Boomtown<\/a>.<\/em> And when Boomtown Rats frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bob-geldof\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bob-geldof\" data-tag=\"bob-geldof\">Bob Geldof<\/a> stopped by the <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bob-geldof-interview-boomtown-rats-reunion-955763\/\">to chat about it,<\/a> he also looked back at several first times from his long career, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-first-time\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-first-time\" data-tag=\"the-first-time\">the first time<\/a> hearing one of his songs on the radio, playing his first gig, and even meeting the Beatles as an adolescent.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, he and his sister pulled off the latter feat in 1964, Geldof reveals, simply by sneaking into their hotel after one of their gigs in Dublin, Ireland and knocking on their door. \u201cThe door answers and there\u2019s this beautiful, 19-year-old boy in a black waist coat and a white shirt and his tie undone,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was Paul McCartney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney invited them into the room to meet the rest of the band. \u201cThey were sitting around one table,\u201d he says. \u201cThey were personally answering the stacks of fan mail. George was a bit pissed off with Paul. Ringo just didn\u2019t care, really. Were were numb and Paul was very kind and was like, \u2018Do you want us to sign your thing?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the interview, he looks back at the first Boomtown Rats show in October 1975. \u201cA girl out of 30 people in the crowd walked over [at the end] and said she wanted to shag me,\u201d he says. \u201cNow I\u2019d read about this in Protestant England and sort of porn mags, but I didn\u2019t believe that girls just walked over and said they wanted to fuck you. The career choice wasn\u2019t that difficult to make.
