Ricky Reed<\/a>, a producer behind four songs on Lizzo<\/a>\u2019s Grammy-winning Cuz I Love You<\/em> album \u2014 six, if you\u2019re looking at the deluxe version, which includes megahit \u201cTruth Hurts\u201d \u2014 is imploring musicians, songwriters, producers, artists, and executives to press pause on songwriting sessions, meetings and shows.  And \u201cno going to packed bars,\u201d Reed added in his Medium post this week<\/a>. \u201cNo eating at restaurants. No brunch. (In South Korea one person attended church and a buffet lunch and was responsible for infecting 1,000 people! Again, no brunch!).\u201d<\/p>\n

Artists who have signed their names in support of the cause include Lizzo, Shawn Mendes, this year\u2019s Grammy-winner for Producer of the Year Finneas, The Go-Go\u2019s, Meghan Trainor, Bebe Rexha, alternative band X Ambassadors, and punk band FIDLAR.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of us had to fight (and are still fighting) tooth and nail for every inch of our careers,\u201d Reed says in the letter. \u201cWhen I moved to L.A., I had to bike and bus to all my sessions. This is the only business that rewards us for staying out late, partying, throwing caution to the wind. We have grown accustomed to endangering our bodies running down a dream. But it\u2019s time to stop.\u201d The letter, written in response to ongoing COVID-19<\/a> concerns, is titled \u201cBe an Introvert, Save the World,\u201d and it is co-penned by fellow hitmakers Justin Tranter, who\u2019s worked extensively with the likes of Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, and Imagine Dragons, and Ross Golan, hit songwriter for stars like Ariana Grande.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might be in good health, young, unbothered,\u201d Reed writes. \u201cBut this virus is not sparing our parents and grandparents. It is not sparing our immunocompromised brothers and sisters. It is not sparing kids with asthma. And an overwhelmed health care system won\u2019t have space for anyone sick for any reason (that includes YOU!) if we don\u2019t act now. The sooner we take bold action (extreme social distancing) the sooner we can get back to our lives.<\/p>\n

Reed and his co-authors want people to see the \u2014 albeit dim \u2014 silver lining here. They argue that this change of pace can lead to surges in creativity. Plus, in a musical landscape that applauds group collaborations and features, this situation can be looked at as a nice test. \u201cSongwriters, when was the last time you wrote a song alone? Producers, been meaning to learn a new instrument or software? Artists, some of the greatest albums have been made in isolation (Bon Iver\u2019s debut, for one). Use this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter promotes the usage of FaceTime or Skype for songwriting sessions \u2014 a time that\u2019s usually meant for multiple writers to intimately congregate in a room to brainstorm musical and lyrical ideas. It encourages innovative usage of social media platforms. \u201cI\u2019m going to plan a scheduled Instagram Live session and take feedback on a new track in real time,\u201d Reed says. \u201cA lot of musicians are new to Twitch, which not only provides a great platform for live streaming your work for collaboration but can generate some income while you\u2019re at it.\u201d The letter also alerts producers to the fact that equipment companies Korg and Moog have made their synth apps free for the rest of the month. As for songwriting camps \u2014 multi-day trips that revolve around a plethora of sessions and often take place in some destination location \u2014 Reed advises that they should be avoided for the time being.<\/p>\n

The three major music publishing companies are on board, evidenced by e-signatures from Sony\/ATV CEO Jon Platt, whose roster is home to Beyonc\u00e9 and Ed Sheeran, Warner Chappell CEOs Carianne Marshall and Guy Moot (Bruno Mars, Green Day) and Universal Music Publishing Group CEO Jody Gerson (Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber).<\/p>\n

So far, record label executives on the list of supporters include Ron Perry at Columbia \u2014 where Lil Nas X, Harry Styles and Vampire Weekend have deals \u2014 Pete Ganbarg at Atlantic, the home of Cardi B and The Rolling Stones, and Keep Cool\/RCA\u2019s Tunji Balogun, who has helped develop the careers of Khalid, SZA and Normani.
