He was looking forward to performing those songs, along with his self-titled debut, which featured jazz standards and selections from musical theater, on his <em>Strong Magic<\/em> Tour. It would be the continuation of a quick ascension that also found him acting in movies like <em>Murder on the Orient Express<\/em> and <em>Harriet<\/em>. But now he\u2019s found himself at home with plenty of time on his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been almost four years straight of barely being at home \u2014 I\u2019ve been \u2018grinding,&#8217;\u201d he tells <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>via email of how he\u2019s using his time off. \u201cSo now I\u2019m taking the time to read to my kid, getting better at \u2018make believe\u2019 each day \u2014 even as a professional, my daughter\u2019s improv skills put me to shame \u2014 and taking walks around the neighborhood with my wife. We\u2019ve been having family dinners each night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Odom has also been enjoying the time to enjoy reading and listening to music. \u201cThere\u2019s always a list of incredible unread fiction for me,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve only read three of the great Toni Morrison\u2019s novels. In her honor and for my enjoyment, I am making my way through all the rest.\u201d As for his musical tastes, he says he\u2019s been turning to what he calls \u201cmusic with meaning.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m drawn to the soulful stuff \u2014 the stuff scratching at those ageless and universal truths,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been listening to a fair amount of Jay Z, as well as Big Maybelle, Bill Withers, and Moses Sumney. We could be here awhile, so we\u2019ll see how deep in the crates this all takes all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the uncertainty of the current situation, he hopes the world gets stronger because of it. \u201cAdversity is a teacher,\u201d he says. \u201cLet\u2019s try to learn the lesson(s) well and quickly if we can.
