Last night on his Instagram live stream, John Mayer said that he expects it to. And there are signs that it\u2019s already starting: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/phish\/\" id=\"auto-tag_phish\" data-tag=\"phish\">Phish<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/trey-anastasio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trey-anastasio\" data-tag=\"trey-anastasio\">Trey Anastasio<\/a> has steadily been posting new songs, all recorded within the last week, that perfectly capture the fear, isolation, and uncertainty of our moment.<\/p>\n<p>Anastasio started with two heartfelt acoustic tracks, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B948D1FJ7uE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lost in the Pack<\/a>,\u201d &nbsp;and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B96kjMTJuaa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">When the Words Go Away<\/a>,\u201d about trying to heal broken relationships while being shut off from the world, and feeling alone. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing nothing to fear when there\u2019s nobody near,\u201d Anastasio sings on \u201cWhen the Words Go Away.\u201d \u201cBut silence can kill, and there\u2019s lots of it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/B-C3XtXDQ2J\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-4.4586330935252\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anastasio got more adventurous with \u201cTimeless,\u201d an electric track co-written with Tom Marshall and Scott Herman, about days and weeks all blurring together. The song uses drum machines and whistling (Anastasio posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-AArwOJTec\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> of him playing it with only his black cat for an audience).<\/p>\n<p>He turned up the volume for his best quarantine song yet, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-C3XtXDQ2J\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">I Never Needed You Like This Before<\/a>,\u201d a heavy, Black Sabbath-like rocker that would sound at home at one of Phish\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve gigs at Madison Square Garden. Over an excellent riff, Anastasio sings about needing companionship during a coming storm: \u201cI\u2019ve never needed you like this before,\u201d he sings, using prerecorded backup vocals and a drum machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI duck taped my UE boom and my phone to the closet door for this one,\u201d Anastasio wrote. \u201cDesperate times!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flood of new music caused one commenter to ask Trey, \u201cCan you make a whole quarantine album, please?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he is,\u201d someone else responded.<\/p>\n<p>If Anastasio is in the mood for playing heavy music, it might be because he was playing with Oysterhead (his supergroup with the Police\u2019s Stewart Copeland and Primus\u2019 Les Claypool) before the pandemic hit. \u201cI forgot how heavy this band is until we started that first Colorado gig,\u201d Anastasio told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s like a heavyweight dogfight.
